PM2 lost detent

Hi, first post and first knife and spyderco :)

Bought myself a paramilitary 2 two weeks ago and loving it so far. Problem is though... I was enjoying my knife, opening and closing it a couple of times and from one opening to another it lost detent. This to me makes the knife pretty useless. I can't carry a knife that will open itself randomly in my pocket or whenever.

Does anyone have any experience with this or what I should do about this? Do I contact spyderco for a replacement or what's the right way of action here?

I'm so bummed, I love this knife but I don't love it without any detent :(

*edit* ah I found the detent ball lying here on the table. Now what.. can I put it back or do I need a new liner from spyderco? *edit*

Well, first of all, welcome to the forum, and congrats on a great choice in the PM2 (in spite of your problem).

Yes, a call to Spyderco would be in order. I did once accidentally pop the detente ball out of an Emerson (CQC-10 IIRC) when I had it apart for cleaning. Took nearly an hour to find the little bugger. I was able to reinstall it and have had no further issues, but that was an Emerson and Ernie doesn't discourage disassembling his knives. To do so with your PM2 voids your warranty.

I bought it from cutleryshoppe and I'm in Ohio right now and will be until jan 5th. What are the chances of me getting a replacement before that?

Contact cutleryshoppe and see if they can rush you a replacement before you contact spyderco. The detent ball should not fall out.

Talked to both spyderco and cutleryshoppe and I was offered a refund by cutleryshoppe or he would send it to spyderco for me. Spyderco told me to send it in.
Should take about a week to get it back which means I won't have it back before I'm going back to sweden.

I know opening the knife will void my warranty, that doesn't bother me that much. I would still open the knife later on for cleaning when that would be necessary but is it possible to get the ball back in place if I actually open the knife or is the best way of dealing with this problem to just send back the knife to spyderco?

Never done a PM2, but I was able to press the ball back into place on the CQC-10 I referred to earlier. Don't have a PM2 on me to look at, but is it possible to do so without disassembling it? If you try, do in in an area you'll be able to find it if it falls.

Looking at my PM2, I think it'd be really difficult to put it back in position without at the very least moving one of the scales out of position. The Détente sits on the portion of the compression lock that wedges between the blade and the stop pin and the only time it's not covered by the blade is for a small portion of time between when the blade clears the détente and the lock snaps into place. Most of the space to maneuver at that point is blocked by the stop pin.

Since you live in Sweden, I'm guessing the warranty issue isn't really all that important to you, as you probably won't be sending it back to the US anytime anything goes wrong with it. I'd say give it a go. The PM2 seems like a pretty simple setup. The one thing to keep in mind though, is that the lanyard tube is flared and won't just slip out of the scales. Look up breaking down the PM2 on Youtube, and I'm sure you'll find something useful.

Given that the ball detent is exposed when the knife is open, I'm fairly certain that, if it fell out once, it will fall out again unless you have the means and the expertise to stake it back in place. I'd say send it back to Spyderco, even if it means them having to ship the replacement knife to Sweden.

I decided to send it to spyderco. I'm staying with a friend here in Ohio and she was the one who ordered it for me too. I will just have her ship it to me once it's returned from spyderco.
I'm kind of annoyed about it, never actually had a chance to use the knife and it breaks on me. After some quick googling I found that I'm hardly the first person to experience this yet when I called cutleryshoppe they acted like it was a one time thing. I even saw Sal Glesser respond to a thread on here about the same problem and that was over a year ago. Guess they have not yet taken care of this problem since it still does happen.

Sorry if I'm a little sour about it but you hear countless of good reviews about PM2 and I get a knife that breaks on me after a couple of flicks. It does make you a little cranky.

Anyway, thank you all for the help. Hopefully I will have my knife back sooner rather than later and I can start enjoying it every day for many years!

Waiting sucks, but Sal will make it right. I've not really seen many instances of this happening with the PM2 (or any Spydie) - at least not with any sort of frequency given the number of them out there.

Mine has been going strong a long while, I'm sure yours will too. :)

I don't believe it's a common occurrence. Many people own multiples of the PM2, that's the sort of following it has. Knives don't see a ton of action before they're packaged up I imagine so some things get missed.

Right call on sending it to Spyderco.
Just have them ship it to your home in Sweden.

Just an FYI, it takes more than a week to get it back from spyderco W&R, usually around 3 weeks from my couple experiences (but then you've gotta expect longer transit times cause of the holiday shopping/return season)
