PM2 pivot locked up solid! :(

I did a search and didn't find what I was looking for, though the terms "PM2" and "lock" tend to bring up info on nothing more than the compression lock (not surprised about that, really).

Anyway, I was talking on the phone this evening, and was absent-mindedly flicking my PM2 open and closed when all of a sudden the thing got REAL gritty, and then more or less quit working. I'm very puzzled by this, as I've never heard of this happening before. As I bought it well-used, I'm sure that it was taken apart already, so I wasn't worried about taking it apart myself. In doing so, I learned that the pivot is more or less pressed into the blade (or at least it appears as such on mine). It's in there good, and it's pretty hard to rotate the blade (both before I took it apart, and after). All copper bushings are present, and I can't see what would have caused it to lock up all of a sudden like that. Any hints? The blade has some very small nicks in the edge, so I've been thinking of having Spyderco resharpen the blade anyway (I don't have a decent setup for reprofiling FFG blades, and don't have the patience or time to do it with the Sharpmaker), so perhaps I'll see if they'll give it a quick once over and fix what ever's wrong for a small fee.

Any suggestions on what would cause it to freeze up like it has? I can't see anything having gotten in there that's small enough to get between the pivot and blade.

My first and only PM2 did the same thing . It was smooth as glass at first, then the pivot was binding up. I never could move the pivot screw, it would not budge after the hot water treatment, blow dryer on hot, or even a soldering iron on the pivot screw. I just could not break the pivot screw loose... Some how it worked itself out and has been back to smooth as glass. By far my favorite blade/platform. Can't wait for my Orange PM2 to arrive this week... Hope you resolve the issue with your's. Wish I had a solution for your issue. I'm sure someone will chime in with some help.

The bushing's fit into 2 notchs on the liners if there not aligned perfectly it will be a pita and could be your problem. If you were flicking it and then it suddenly happened my bet is something is stuck on your detentball

The blade should move freely about the bushing and the bushing should slide out. When you tighten the pivot screw the liners tighten up on the shoulders of the bushing, so if the blade doesn't move about the bushing the blade won't move freely. I would think some kind of dirt got between the bushing and the blade and is causing it to bind. Try to tap out the bushing and wipe off any crud. If it doesn't go back in easy then I would take some fine sandpaper and take a couple passes and see if it cleans it up. But if it happened abruptly it is probably a piece of junk and not oxidation. Good luck.
