Just bought a s90v pm2 and its on its way. I have one in s30v and for what I do for work, it's just not holding up. I have to sharpen it all throughout the day. Did I get a good blade for rigorous cutting though small wires, cardboard, and rope?

I'm a fan of s90v, I have a seconds manix2xl that's my primary user in s90v and a sourhfork and they're my favorite so far. Great edge retention and no problems chipping so far. Para 2 is one of my favorite models and will be awesome in that steel.

A PM2 with S90V ? From where ?

And S90V is outstanding in edge retention. But if you're having to sharpen S30V (which is a great steel) all throughout the day then you must be doing some severe cutting at work.

Just bought it from the exchange $260

And yes I do hvac and most of the time my blade is open in my hand or in my mouth cause my hands are occupied.

And oh yes s30v chips like hell. I had to buy a work sharp. I noticed that it sharpened it to a sort of convex edge and it actually holds out a little longer.

Any of the steels will chip out on wire at some point of thinness or low angle. Less tough steels require more steel to support which makes cutting more difficult. I'd suggest a higher strength steel like 3V for what you do instead of a higher carbide steel that will probably wear the same way your current knife is.

It's all a trade off but for cutting wires the knife isn't the best tool requiring a trade off of thicker geometry and less cutting ease which essentially means duller blade.

If you can't carry a wire cutter maybe try something like the Tuff in 3V, or other similar higher strength instead or higher wear resistance steel as a test to see if that works better. Even going to something like Aus 8 or 6, or 440A, Bucks 420HC might show if you are losing cutting to wear or fracture of the edge.

Just a thought.

If you're cutting through wires and things that chip S30V, you're going to have issues with S90V as well. It will hold an edge longer but it's still going to chip...and it's going to be considerably more difficult to sharpen.

I would suggest ZDP-189 or M4 for tough use like you are describing.

Check out the Stretch 2 in ZDP-189 or the Bradley folder in M4.

I do have wire strippers that work way better. But sometimes their on the other side of the unit haha. But I will try the m4 steel also.

I know how that can be when it's hold something or balance with one hand and cut with what you have that you can get to.

CPM M4 is a fairly tough steel as they go but then again any will fail at a given thinness. If you have time to work out the correct edge for your needs to give good enough cutting while retaining the strength needed for your job it should serve well. For cutting with high lateral loads don't be disappointed if the factory edge type needs mods. Just modify it to suit you as you would any other tool.

If a plain jane OTC knife would stand up to your uses you wouldn't have to try others.

It's good hearing from people that do use their edges hard, not just the knife. There is a lot more learning and trying to get the edge just right. Please let us know as you work things out. It might help someone out in the future who needs the same qualities in a knife.

I know you aren't real new here but welcome to Spyderco/BF

It's my grail knife. I love S90V but you really don't want to let it get too dull, I learned the hard way. Now I touch mine up often so it doesn't get to that point.

If you got that CF/S90V pm2 in the classified here yesterday, it looks like you paid $250? If so, you basically stole that thing! I've been looking for one under $350-$400 with no luck. They all seem $500+...

I know! I saw on the bay. They are selling as high as 500-600 bucks.

it won't won't be as desirable when I'm done with it.

Don't think you'll notice much of a difference with the heavy cutting you do. I would recommend something in CPM 3V or M4

Just got the S90v PM2 in today. The description said it was used but this thing is NIB. I'm probably gonna make this one a safe queen.

I would skip ZDP-189 for wires. Tuff in 3V, Gayle Bradley in M4, or Military or Manix in CRUWEAR would be one of mine I would pick.

I actually have a military cruwear but it's just too big. Im gonna try the tuff.
