Who would like to see a 3,5" Native? Pros and cons?
Some visual aid i made. The Native and the Chief with the PM2:

And the mid sized Native (made in Gimp):

What say you?

Interesting... I would buy one I think. I don't own a chief, but I do love my native 5. I typically carry knives in the PM2 size range, so a "mid sized" native would be worth a try. That being said...

The thing that gets me about this mid sized degsine (cheif owners chime in?) Is the native to me is so great because it is so small. If I need or want a shorter blade for any reason, the native fits the bill while still giving me a comfortable four finger grip with the choil. Would this be making some of the native 5's greatest strengths in ergos irrelevant? Not saying it would, just some thoughts.

Nice job on the photo by the way.

Spyderco has a history of making a range of knife sizes within popular model lines/families, like:

1) the Resilience-Tenacious-Persistence,
2) the Endura-Endela-Delica and
3) the Military- Para Military 1 - Para Military 2 - Para 3 (which superceded the 1 in terms of size).

So, it wouldn't surprise me if they also made a mid-sized Native to fill the gap between the Native Chief and the Native, if they there's a need/demand for it.

"Campaigns" to develop new models often originate in the Spyderco Forums and, if the OP is serious about this, that's where I'd suggest he push the idea but, if Spyderco isn't willing to commit to making such a knife now (or in the near future), perhaps a dealer would be convinced to contract for an exclusive.

Oh yes, someone else started a thread over there the other day and I liked the idea, so I created the mockup. I am curious about the response here on BF too. I know I could use this more than a Manix and the Shaman is not my cup of tea at all. I think there are no alternatives for a humples, mid-sized backlock with a forward finger choil. Even if they bring back the back-lock Manix, it wouldn't do the trick.

The existence of other ranges is exactly the reason behind this one too. For some people the Native is too small and for others the Chief is too big. A mid-sized model would be a real goldilocks.

They allready did.
It's called the shaman .

I was going to mention that Shaman but, even though it's supposedly an offshoot of the Native line, it's really in a category of it's own.

Even though it has a 3.58" blade, it has a compression (not back) lock and is much too big/fat/wide to come even close to being considered a mid-sized knife that would fit between the Native and Native Chief.

So, I think another knife that fits in terms of size and that shares the same design characteristics of the Native & Native Chief would be more in line w/what the OP is talking about.

I'll admit the blade design and handle are different.
But... that's what the Shaman is sold as.

Personally I don't see a attraction to a midsized Chief.
The Chief is a well executed knife and easy to carry.

A 1/2 inch of blade length wouldn't sing to me.

The mid sized mock up is the most aesthetically pleasing, and size wise would be my choice of the 3.

Nice work btw.

I think it would be the perfect entry point model for the Native line. If you need to go either bigger or smaller there would be an option to go to. Sure, right now the Native is like that, because there is the Lil Native, but the choices are a bit unbalanced.

Sal has already said he is working on a slimmer Shaman. Shaman Lightweight, if you will. I believe it will still be comp lock, but will be thinner, frn handled, can't remember if it's going to be choiless or not. That will fill the void for a 3.5 Native imo... No backlock, but Sal already said a backlock shaman would need a complete redesign, and he's not going to do that.

I don't think a Shaman or any of its future derivatives will ever scratch this itch. The comp lock alone is a no go.

Because there is so little difference between the Native and the Chief designs, I presume their CAD guy could do a mid-sized Native all by himself on a short notice. As another Spyderco enthusiast wrote:

"The Native is basically a smaller version of the Chief; Chief bigger version of the Native. Same stock, pivot, choils, angles, cutouts and stop pin placements, even the PB washers. No redesign really."
