I was under the assumption this steel is horrible for knives due to its very low corrosion resistance. Seems spyderco did a sprint run with that steel though. Is it GTG or nah?

Unless you live near the ocean, if you know how to take care of carbon steels, it is GTG. I would imagine some models are DLC coated just in case.

It's extremely tough and easy to sharpen like 1095, and has been around forever. More popular for fixed blades than folders from what I've seen.

Corrosion resistance is about the same as 1095 - I don't think anyone thinks 1095 is a horrible steel for knives, it's just something you have to take care of
with high carbon steels.

It’s not designed to be a safe queen. It’s meant to use and perform. It’s gonna get some pepper spots, maybe some rust, and turn colors.

If you want it to stay pristine it’s gonna need oiled and stored properly.

It’s an absolutely excellent knife and steel.

Super fine grain.

Didn't they ever teach you not to assume?
52100 is a great steel for knives...unless one is obsessive about keeping their knives shiny and new looking (and, even then, it certainly isn't horrible). 52100, CPM-M4, and Cruwear are probably my 3 favorite PM2s.

I use all my knives. Even my olamic rainmaker is gonna get used once I get it. I was just confused by the steel choice. As for knowing how to take care of the blades. I know to wipe my blades down and to apply a thin coat of oil when going near Salt water and after.

Your wife gonna be mad at you buster. Up late looking at more knives. you have spent enough $$ this past month. Enjoy what ya got and save your stimulus money. Buy something nice for your wife or save for your kids college. Hahaha.... Just kidding.....

Busse uses a modified 52100 and calls it SR101. It's good steel, takes a nice edge and pretty tough.

Hahaha! I just spent a grand on her for clothes and makeup. Sadly I've spent way more on knives :(

52100 is my favorite high carbon steel, extremely tough and easy to sharpen. Some of my sharpest blades are 52100, Marble's Campcraft and Fieldcraft from when Mike Stewart was in charge there. It has a very fine grain structure and takes a very fine edge and holds it a long time. Like any high carbon steel it takes a little care, just wipe the blade down with BreakFree or Vaseline or whatever your favorite rust preventive is if you're not using it regularly.

I've got those same knives, Ed, plus several other production and customs in 52100. A fantastic steel which I was just thinking earlier today doesn't get spoken about enough of late.

I think it is about 60-62 rc should be pretty decent
