So after the question that was posed here about which knife you would take on a one month venture in the pacific north west. I brought a little selection of blades with me on a hike up to one of my favorite high mountain lakes and see what I liked the best.
It is truly amazing how much a couple feet of snow can turn a simple day hike into a real venture. I have done this hike many times and it took me about 3 times as long and made getting any kind of fire going a true task. I brought along a Becker BK2, Becker BK14, Buck Punk and pack light Skinner, as well as a couple others. It became ever so apparent that bigger is better! The BK2 is a awesome knife and by far was my favorite, however I was wishing I had something with some more chopping power.
Hacking deep into standing dead wood to try to find dry wood and tinder proved to be a task with all of the blades. The Becker bk2 was by far the best for the heavy work and the brute strength of it as a sharpened pry bar is great for stabbing in and prying out wood. The punk is great and the fine edge sliced into wood great but lacked heft to pry out large pieces.
I guess I am just going to get my hand on some more of the Becker, BK7 and BK9
Few animal tracks on the trail BK14 for size comparison.
So much for fishing lake was frozen over
