Pocket Axe?

This axe was my wife's grandfather's. He passed away about 10 years ago so I don't have any information from him on it. The family says he's had this for as long as they can remember and he used it to run a trapline when he was younger. The maker's label or mark is long gone so I'm hoping some of you might know what it is and it's intended use. The whole thing measures just under 9 inches. I plan on cleaning it up a little and maybe putting a new handle on it if I can find one or I might have to make one. Well thought some of you might enjoy as I haven't seen anything like it before:

Sorry for the problems with the pictures. Any suggestions for why the URL is not working on them? This is my first time trying to post pictures so please forgive my ignorance on it.

Did you hit the "picture button" on top of the text box??? It will insert HTML codes on either side of your URL for your pic. It will look like this in the text box:

If you hold your curser over the icons a little description will pop up. Go to the one that looks like a picture frame, it will pop up "Insert Image" then post your URL in the dialogue that comes up.

yes that is what I did and that is what it looked like below. I tried both the long and shorcut URL's too.

Hmmm...I don't use flickr, but it might be on that end. I use picassa. I have to select the options that say: "Imbed Image" and "Image only (no link)" And then I copy the URL.

Don't know if that helps...

That's what I did. I tried pasting in the whole URL and the short URL, same results both times.

Small..but there! Now you probably need to increase your image size to 600 to 800ish.

And switch to Picassa! :D

In Flickr, click the picture, then click share, then BBcode , then control c on the BBcode. then come to this thread and open the box with the tree (i think it's a tree) then control v into the URL box.

I have what looks to be close to the very same size axe. On mine ---- the head is a metallic blue color and is marked Craftsman. It is about 9 1/2" in total length and was purchased new in 1956.

I bought this tiny carpenter's hatchet with hammer poll, 10 inches long, and the edge is only around 2 inches.

I thought I would find some use for it, but I haven't, so it's one of those purchases from the Bay that was regretted later.

Hi Steve, I'll send you my mailing address ;-)) I like it a Lot.

Best regards

I am gonna talk and sure someone will correct me,

Your handle looks like it has been broken off at the head and carved or rasped down to fit and then put back in the handle, I have done this before. there are a lot of little child's or youth axes or some say sales men sample, if it doesn't have a mark I would say it a vaughn or collins, but craftsman, hartwell, and belknap also had a tiny hatchet that looked hust about like this but with a handle around 11 inches long, hmmmn, break off 2 inches, about the height of the head and here we are. I love little axes handy as a pocket on a shirt and will almost fit.

this pic contains a craftsmans and a hartwell

I sold several of the Craftsman hatchets when I was in the antique business. My immediate first impression of your hatchet was "This is a Craftsman". Steve, I have never seen a carpenter's hatchet like yours. How about flipping a coin to decide whether you will give it to Robin or me. LOL!

ooooo :D nice score! ive been looking for one of these. hoping one turns up locally for a reasonable price.
ive read online that they tend to break off easily.....
im assuming only under improper use.if yer not taking it to something you shouldnt be ,it looks like it would be a really awesome tool to have and could potentially last a really long time:thumbup:
