Pocket/Belt Clip Installation Question

I'm about to start on my first leather sheath with a belt/pocket clip. It will actually be used as a boot clip. I've seen a few tutorials, but I haven't actually seen one that addresses my questions.

This is a large clip and just above the rivet hole is a dog leg in the metal. Do you make a slit in the leather for this also? If not, what's the purpose of this little bend in the metal?

I cut a slot for the "bump" to fit in. But honestly, I dont really know the reason for it. I use just as many clips that dont have that bump.

All I can figure is it acts like a keeper to hold better to the belt. but it kind of doesn't make sense.
