I was looking through STR's maker area and found a pic of a Case trapper with one of his low rider pocket clips on it. What do you all think of a pocket clip on a traditional slip joint? Are there any traditional slip joints that comes with a pocket clip from the factory?

I have a few large slip joints that I dont carry often because of the fit in my pocket. A clip added to one might make it more easy for me to carry more often.

I think a clip on a traditional knife is like having an elevator in an outhouse... It just don't work. A better idea IMO is sewing a area of your pockets to keep your larger knives upright.

STR's work is awesome, but i kind of agree a clip doesnt work on a slippie.(IMO)

I'm the first to tell folks that clips and slippies are not my cup of tea and that my personal feelings are much like those already voiced. However, some people know what they want, ask for it and who am I to tell them what to like or dislike? I've had rare occasion where a slippie, be it this Trapper or a SAK knife was sent to me to have a clip installed on it. I don't like doing it. In fact if I had my ruthers I'd avoid working on pinned type folders of all kinds period but some have been offered for so long that its hard to say no when I've said yes before.

In answer to your question. Case offers a Mid Folding Hunter in CV or SS that comes with a thumb stud and pocket clip for tip down right hand carry. This is a liner locking slip joint with a back spring albeit a weakened down one for spring tension. I have two of these knives, one of each in stainless and CV steel and they are among my favorite Case knives. I know they offer a Trapper with a thumb stud also but I do not know if it also came with a clip or not.

To me it's like modernizing a classic car. Like putting Foose wheels, fiberglass body extensions, and a fuel-injected engine on a '64 Mustang. I understand why somebody might do that, but it's still wrong.

Traditionals are exactly that - Traditional!, I had a good look at the photo of that Case with a pocket clip, and being a fan of my Kershaw speedbump, its an attractive thought, BUT!!...when I look at my traditional folders-(which grow on me increasingly and worryingly more and more everyday)...I just couldnt imagine drilling a hole in my beautifull knife!!..... an impossible thought-no way!!...but in saying that...the comment of "it's burying the knife great " is totally correct..it does make the knife sit in the pocket very well.
I do like a few of the Kershaws..such as the blur, speedbump, junkyard dog etc, but they now have no comparison to the feel, the satisfaction from the handling of a Traditional slippie/lockback.
It basically stems back to the argument, which is based on pure personal taste...traditonal, or tactical? Traditional dont have pocket clips, tactical do!

There's something very wrong with that on a deep level. Like said, it's like messing up a classic car, or jazzing up the National Anthem.

FYI,And I was told by reliable source
The first pocket clips were put on liner locks ,and this, was requested by cowboys working in the industry,in the 2Oth century.
Easy access to the knife while roping & whatnot, was the idea.

So,if you ponder that, the pocket clip does not seem so non traditional anymore, just function.
But IMO,it'd need to be a larger folder, because big clips on small knives doesn't jive & small clips for small knives is an injustice to the function of the clip & knife, too.

Most custom handmade slipjoint makers would not be interested in mounting clips on thier knives, but you can do what you wish,to your knives. Also Case & Moore Maker have one with a clip,I do believe

To each his own. I use to abhor pocket clips, and would automatically remove them on any knife I bought. But these days, I really like them on certain knives, especially larger knives with clips that ride deep.

It is sort of like modding a classic car, except many traditionals aren't "classic" in the same sense. You can find them new at the hardware store or a thousand places online.

It might not look bad on an alox SAK, but they don't seem big enough to me to require a pocket clip. I can't think of a traditional I would personally want it done to, though. My really big knives usually end up in the back pocket.

To answer your question in the most simple way......I don't. :p

I understand why people do it, but personally I wouldn't. Then again, I don't really like the idea of modding any of my knives.

Not too sure how I feel about this.
On the one hand, trad slippies belong IN a pocket.
On the other hand, from a functional point of view, it is easier to get to clipped on.
I say it's your slippie, do what you want with it. If you want a clip on it, put it on and enjoy. Life is too short to not have some fun.

Are there any traditional slip joints that comes with a pocket clip from the factory?

The Case Mid Folding Hunter comes with a pocket clip from the factory. It has a liner lock as well but the backspring is a slip joint that holds the blade open even with the liner lock disengaged. It also has a thumb stud for opening the blade one-handed. Mine is amber bone with a CV blade and i found it a nice traditional design with modern touches.

That said, the thumb stud is too small to be comfortable opening the knife with the spring tension on the blade, the liner lock is a moot issue since it seems flimsy and the back spring keeps the blade open just fine, and the clip is so small and tight that i don't think it is really all that secure.

I do like the knife though and still carry it from time to time. YMMV.

I'd never do it, but then again, I don't call slipjoints 'slippies' either. Seems demeaning to do either.

I also own a number of what might be called 'tactical' knives. Another term I hate, but that's another story. Don't use the pocket clips on any of them - knife goes in pocket. I'm the only one who knows it's there. Don't like to advertise.

Like wearing sandals with socks, it just doesn't look right. Plus I'm pretty sure I can get down to the bottom of my pocket to get my knife just as quickly as if it were clipped to the top.

The thought to me is enough to cause an upset stomach. :D
