Hi RH,
I hear that confession is great for the soul. Feel any better for unburdening that you own a knock-off SOG?
In my desk at work, along with about 30-40 various knives, is a knock-off Air-SOG. Though a cheap imitation, it is structured very similarly along with nearly identical looks. In other words, Zytel (maybe a lesser quality material on the knock-off) handles. There are no steel liners.
To do a clip install well, the screws should be anchored into a steel liner. My guess is, the screws would strip out at a little more than light to moderate tension (if not during the installation process). You may wish to try wood-type screws with aggressively deep threads, then back them out and permanently epoxy them in. I wouldnt offer much hope in either success or that the install would last long (especially if you use the clip as one is intended).
The SOG Air-SOG comes standard with a dual mounting (vertical and horizontal) nylon pouch. I might suggest this method to carry your pos knock-off!
Sorry RH, knock-offs are a very sensitive subject with manufacturers like SOG. A number of manufacturers have quite a number of their models ripped of (Spyderco with likely the most). It is a sign of flattery to be replicated, but it does erode at our sales and reputation.
As long as you dont bring your knock-offs here to play with, you are more than welcome to come and play in the SOG forum anytime!
