I have wondered this for a while but felt dumb asking...

Does the factory position of a pocket clip on a knife mean anything ? For example the Para Military 2 comes from the factory in the tip down configuration, does this represent the position suggestion of Spyderco and the knifes designer ? Or is it just where they put them cause that is how they sit on the assembly line?

This is just a stab in the dark here, but based on the original paramilitary and current military having the clip positioned tip down only I would guess Sal and Eric think tip down in best with this knife. I would imagine the tip up option on the paramilitary 2 was a concession for folks who prefer tip up carry.

Pocket clip positions can start holy wars!

When I started buying knives with pocket clips, almost all of them were tip down. (This happens to work the best for me so I never thought twice about it.) A few years ago I bought a Benchmade mini-grip which is tip up. It also works well for me but I've discovered that this is because it has a relatively short handle. I start looking at new knives, most of them larger, and find a lot of them are tip up. I bought a Benchmade 581 Barrage, tip up only, and it does not work for me. I can't pull the knife out and open it in a quick motion because the clip is on the wrong end. But in my recent searching I've wondered why some manufacturers offer tip up and some offer tip down. I've also wondered for knives that have the option to put the clip on both ends, how do they determine which end to put the clip on. I read about a lot of people that switch their clips to the other end. I don't want to have to do that because I also read about a lot of people that strip the screws and so forth when moving clips.

Fortunately there are plenty of knife models available that are tip up and plenty that are tip down to give knife buyers plenty to choose from. Of the knives on my wish list, one is tip down, two are tip up, and one is either but apparently comes tip up.
