Which pocket clip types lessen wear on pants pocket ? Wire or solid? Does style of clip play much role? Is it tightness of clip? Handle material?

Has Spyderco done any testing in this area?

Neither cause any wear on my pants pockets, as I take them both of the knives I carry. But, based on observation of the clips themselves, I'd found a fair percentage of the solid ones to have at least a few rough spots along the edge. To me, this would cause wear and tear on clothing unless one took the time and effort to correct it. Given the fact that they are stamped and formed pieces of sheetmetal, the rough edges are not terribly surprising. On the other hand, I've never observed rough edges on a wire clip, and the very nature of wire make me think it less likely, so I'd venture that the wire would have less potential to cause wear, at least straight "out of the box".

Second, strictly "theoretical" observation - it would seem reasonable to say that most of us carry a knife for a considerable amount of time each day, but only remove it from and replace it in the pocket occasionally. Thus a tight fitting clip, while it might cause more wear when the knife is retreived and replaced, may very well save overall wear and tear by preventing the constant rubbing action a more loose fitting one allows when the knife is in the pocket and the user is in motion.

The wire clip with two points of pressure should cause more wear than the soild clip. The solid clip spreads the pressure over a wider area therefore the solid clip SHOULD cause less wear. If the solid clip has rough edges of course the roughness will cause wear. I have the solid clip and have no issues. Knife is used twenty or more times a day.

In my experience it is more the handle material rather than the clip itself. G-10 is a bit rough on pants...

In looking at the wear to the pocket, it does appear that more is on the back of the pocket (at the top) and that the is source of wear to the front as well. The denims I have on are close to four years old so its not a huge problem. I like them and may get stitched up in a way that will protect the pocket and let the stitching take the wear. I also need too since the pocket material is separating from the denim. It sucks that the more grippy the knife handle surface the more pocket wear but I think that is so.

I do take the knife out my pocket more often than nessesity would dictate, so that is a factor too.

As for the clips, I just started to pass the inside corners over the stones to take out some of the roughness.

I find that clips that are real tight are the ones that wear my pants the most. I have on a few of my knives loosen the clips, bent them back a bit. Also depends on what pants I wear, dress pants have thinner pockets then my jeans.
All that said, I like the wire clip the best. It seems to hold well and yet when I pull the knife my pocket doesnt (come with it ).
You really dont need a lot of tension to keep the knife clipped onto a pocket.
good knife hunting

I like using a lanyard and letting the knife sit in my pocket, a lot of production knives offer both clips and a hole for a lanyard.
