Pocket clip steel type?

Just wondering what type of steel Benchmade pocket clips were made of? My 710, 722, 705 and Griptillians all have similar clip/finish. My 530 has what appears to be a painted clip instead of the dark/anodized finish. Paint is popping off on the edges of the 530 clip and I'm thinking about hitting it with a wire brush to remove all the black paint. My only concern is rusting of the clip.

I would not worry about rusting a clip out, I don't think I've ever seen a pocket clip rust. The steel may be 420J2, very common stainless steel that liners and clips are made from.

Worst case scenario - give Benchmade a call and they'll send you a new clip for free.

Yes, Benchmade will probably send you a new parkerized clip.

Never seen a spot of rust on a clip, I think 420J like stated earlier.

The ones with Benchmade USA written on them are parkerized, the others with only Benchmade are painted. Benchmade CS will send you whatever style you want if you ask politely. :-) None will rust so easily unless maybe they are left in saltwater for a few weeks. ;-)

Well, its all natural now. Took it to a wire wheel on a grinder at work...removed all the black. Too bad the rest of the paint didn't come off as easy as the part that chipped off around the edges on its own. I may get a low-rider clip for the 530 if I decide I really like it. I wanted it because it was so thin...and that it is.

I have seen someone that polished the paint off the clip with a dremel but the black paint deep in the inlayed benchmade logo remained behind. It actually looked pretty good.

Why not use a dab of paint stripper and finish what the wheel could not? Really quite easy and fast.
