Pocket clips...Good, bad and downright ugly!

Currently I have 5 pocketknives that have pocket clips;

Spyderco Dragonfly
Cold Steel Tuff Lite
Three Rivers Nomad
Ontario Rat 1
and the worst of them all, the ZT0450.

Why is it the worst? Well, this is kind of a follow up on a thread from a couple of years ago.(ZT0450 pocket clip play, Feb 21, 2017) They made the holes on the clip too large, which means that there is enough clip play that the clip can slide over and wind up on top of the lock bar, affecting what should be excellent flipping action on this knife. Hinderers for example have a recessed indentation / cut out for the clip so this won't happen.

ZT CS has known about this issue for years and won't do anything about it other than suggesting blue loctite. Well, the loctite worked for about a year and a half but it failed. I tried the loctite again but it simply won't hold, even after letting it dry for 72 hours.

To make matters worse, one of the screws has stripped and won't come out. So now I can't even remove the badly designed clip!

I expected better from ZT but I purchased the knife before I read the 2017 thread.

After the COVID restrictions I'm going to send the knife back to ZT to see if they can get rid of the clip play. Why they won't make clips with properly sized holes is beyond me, but when I asked CS about this they said they had no plans to do so.

ZT#1: We've got a problem with the 0450 pocket clips.
ZT#2: What is it?
#1: Well, the screw holes are too large and the clip won't stay put, it wobbles.
#2: That's not good..
#1: Somebody screwed up. We'll have to make new clips
#2: Naw, just use 'em, no one likes our clips anyway...
#1: Uh..ok, but....

My 0450 had clip wobble after +/- 2 years of ownership.

I used the blue LocTite trick (between clip & scale) and it’s been good for the ensuing 2 years. I did, however, take time to clean the parts thoroughly. If I need to do it again, I’ll be even more anal about removing any leftover residue. (Thumbnail, isopropyl, acetone, repeat)

Stripping a screw is frustrating. I’ve done it myself. Excepting over zealous manufacturer torque/thread locker, it’s usually attributable to operator error.

FWIW, I used ZT customer service last spring. The turnaround was long—several months. They cited COVID. Hopefully things have improved.
