Pocket Fixed Blade With Pocket Sheath Combo

I've been on the prowl for a few months now for a pocket fixed blade with a compact pocket sheath.

The top contender: LT Wright Patriot

One problem: The sheath is not a dedicated pocket sheath. Can someone point me to a good leather pocket sheath for this? I prefer one with a clip on it so it can hang onto the top of my jean's pocket.

I'm open to other suggestions...with some ground rules!

1.) No convex edges. I am good at maintaining V-edges, not convex. That basically rules out bark river knives! but DAMN the Bark River PSK was easily gonna win this battle if it weren't convex...And that JRE PSK clip sheath wouldve been perfection.

2.) Maximum overall length of 6.25in.

3.) If you're going to recommend "searching the knifemaker section on this forum and looking for one there", don't bother. I've been on it for the past month now and nothing available has really caught my eye. If you want to recommend custom, please recommend one that has been posted and is available, or a maker that you know for sure has his books open and not a half year wait.

4.) If you have an LT Wright Patriot, please show me how you carry it in your pocket. If you modded the stock sheath by cutting the belt loop off, i'd love to see that.

Thanks for reading!

Vit

I have noticed that some of the regular PFB makers are posting a bit less frequently lately.
Have you considered putting up a thread with your requirements in the services wanted section? See who comes to you - either for the knife or sheath. I have also flicked you a pm with one suggestion.

Thanks again, CL. I actually haven't used the "wanted" section yet. Should be fun. I will explore it sometime tomorrow.

I like the LT Wright Patriot...but I like the Bark River Mini Fox River much more. I pocket its regular sheath; and sometimes I use a KSF pocket sheath. I know you don't want a convex edge...but nobody says you can't put a V edge on it when it needs sharpening. Go just a smidge bigger, and you've got the Dozier modified personal or the SwampRat Rodent 3

From the top - Patriot, SwampRat R3, Dozier modified personal, BRKT mini fox river

What is it about the MFR that you like so much? You're right, i could put a v-edge on a convex when i sharpen. For now, i'd like to try to find a piece that's nice and squared away from the beginning.

It feels much better in hand, which is a huge thing for me - if I don't like the way a knife feels, it is quickly set aside. The Dozier is my absolute favorite of that group...I think I might like it to much; because I don't want to mess it up.

About two minutes ago, I bought a new SurviveKnife GSO 3.5 in CPM-3V with sheath and options for $148. 20% off sale. They even have some seconds for $15 less. This is my 3rd SurviveKnife, and it's a dandy... Don't miss out.

I think my BlindHorseKnives Bushbabies are first uncles to your L.T. Wright. All are good knives. I have no special source for these sheathes; they came with the knives...
I gave my NIB mini Fox River to my gd-daughter; much too pretty a knife for me to carry..
I like this particular D-ring with Dangler sheath at the top; fits my pocket nicely with a lanyard to yank on...

This carry is quite discrete but practical...

...and much less "public" than this method of carry...

and more stable than this "buried sheath" method...

I am a fan of JK Knives. He is a custom maker here and his books are sitting around mid may. He uses 01 tool steel primarily, but also uses s30v on request and possibly 154cm, but I'm not sure on that.

He will make you a knife to your Exact specifications. He can also make you pocket leather sheath and add a small loop to have it hang from a drop leg like Sonny shows in his first pic.

This is his site: http://www.jkhandmadeknives.com

And this is his subforum here:

Get in touch with him. If you don't see anything in his site that piques your interest, tell him. He will make you "Your knife".

Edit: added photo.

Bill Akers (Backwood Customs) here on the forum makes an excellent pocket EDC knife and leather pocket sheath with clip.

I would not rule out Bark River's small knives over the convex edge thing as they make some nice pocketable blades including this Essential. Either learn how to convex or just resharpen as you do now with a V edge.

big thanks to all contributors. especially to sonnydaze with the carry options :) brisket, you're right, i usually lust over bark river and it's only my inadequacy that drives me away from them. i will make a decision soon!

I do understand how you feel about Bark River.
Here's my Mini-Fox River that I gave to my grand-daughter last fall.
She is a great young lady and I thought she should have this beautiful fixed blade...

...of course, I bought this knife very reasonably from our Exchange here. Just could not resist it... Seems like a pattern...:)

Agree with the Bark River suggestions as well. I often carry a City Knife with a folder in a KnivesShipFree pocket sheath.

PLOT TWIST: I just did a total 180 and got a new Bark River PSK with Elmax and hollow pins. Do forgive my insolence at the beginning of this thread. I did mention from the very start that the PSK wouldve won my heart over, had it not been for its convex edge. I figured i would just drop my complaints and take this as an opportunity to learn more and give convex another chance. I'm expecting some insanely comfortable pocket-ability with this knife. A convex edged knife that can always be with me will always beat those dozens of v edges that could not be with me cause they were not comfortable enough to carry. I concluded that even the LT Wright lost its standing as a candidate because its handles are quite thick.

One more question: does anyone have experience with the JRE Industries Clip sheath? It is labeled "belt clip" but i'm wondering if it is applicable for pocket carry. Looks good so i'm pretty interested. http://www.jreindustries.com/SHEATHS/psk/pskbeltclip4.JPG

Good on ya' KaramVit.

I just picked up a Mini Fox River in Desert Ironwood and I loooove it! I'm now seriously considering a PSK w/ liners because it's so small, (hence my signature). The only hesitation that I have is the .085" blade...seems awfully slim. How are you liking yours? Is it good in hand?

As far as JRE, they have great looking stuff, but I'm not patient enough to wait 6 months for a sheath.

Mine will be arriving on Monday, so i have yet to see it. However, i definitely find the non-elmax versions too thick. 0.145" on the other versions is too much for me. That's why i opted for the 0.085" thickness. 2" blade doesn't need to be thick to prevent against bending stress anyways. In any case, i'd judge it by your uses, more than anything else. I'll update when i get it in the mail.

i have the PSK Elmax now... I'm pleased with it! 0.085" is absolutely not too thin. Pocket sheath comes in today.

Check JR's bushcraft & survival knives. He makes a neckr that is really good. I have two. I'll try to take a pic of them some time. They fit a pocano ksf sheath.
