Pocket heaters.

A while ago I ran across an old pocket heater.

It looked like a small cigarette case and was lined with asbestos, they work by lighting a piece of coal and letting it smolder safely in your pocket.

I can't find one now.

does anyone know of a company that makes them or are they relegated to lucky finds?

EDIT: I pulled my head out of my backside, they still make them!

The reason I was asking is because these things make those disposable pocket heaters a joke.

I also really like the idea of 6 hours at a time keeping a coal going with out even trying.

Zippo makes one. I heard it works great. I saw one in person... it's not exactly tiny.

i've got the red velvet one lined with asbestos weave, it burns the coghlans fuel sticks, light em on each end for 3+ hours of hot heat

Man, I use to have a few of those.. I think I still do just not sure where they are now...lol(CRS)

Would definitely warm up a hand warmer, or a body if place inside a jacket in a hurry !!

Will have to se if I can find them and put'em back in service for this winter/fall..

Thanks for posting

I have the Zippo model and I like it quite a bit. It works very well. The chemical disposable packs that you can buy are probably more cost-effective and work just as well or better, but there's something very cool about the Zippo IMHO. My dad got it for me at a local hardware store.

I have the small original Jon-e-warmer. It works great. You need to wrap it in a handkechief though, cos it gets pretty hot.

Can you share any hints of tips on making them work? I bought one a few years back to use while ice fishing. The couple of times I tried it, I couldn't get it to stay lit. I was using Ronsonol (lighter fluid) as fuel and followed the instructions that came with the warmer.

Thanks for any info,

I have a couple of the Zippo warmers. In the winter, I'll put them inside a down vest and turn down the thermostat. They work well-- until they don't. The problem is that the heating elements eventually go bad, and Zippo doesn't sell replacements. Supposedly, though, this one fits: http://store.advancedmart.com/reelforbaprh.html

I have yet to try them.

IIRC, you have to pre-burn the wick under the head , then put it out. Fill it up with lighter fluid, beig careful to not over-fill. If you over-fill it, LF will mess up your pocket. The warmer actually glows, not burns. I can't seem to find mine (got too much stuff ,LOL ). Maybe re-check the instructions, and try it now in nice weather before the cold hits.

I've got the Jon-E and some chemical ones. My chemical ones are several years old, and don't last very long, but the Jon-E does. It's more work, and it smells, but it works great.

nifty, I like zippo... but a few reviews seemed to take issue with the burner unsetting easily.

I think I'll get one that burns solid fuel :D

I don't want movement to possibly stop my heat.
