pocket knife for father-in-law?

My wife and I were thinking that a pocket knife might be a nice fathers' day gift for her father. He is not a knife guy, although I've seen him use some awful, cheap-o pen knife before. He works in a bookbinding shop around a lot of paper products and machinery, and spends a fair amount of his free time gardening. I peg him as someone who would prefer a traditional style knife. He has big, stubby hands, so it should be easy to open but fairly small for pocket carrying. We'd spend up to $50 bucks.

Let the suggestions begin!

try a sodbuster jr. a lot of companies have them, and they can be had in either stainless or carbon steel. they are usually relatively inexpensive, traditional, and effective.

I love my sodbusters and think that one would make a great gift. I know you said 'small', but I also think a One Handed Trekker by Victorinox would be a great gift with a little added utility.

Something like a Queen or Case slipjoint would make a nice gift, and seems to fit your criteria. There are also many different sizes and styles to choose from, so there is bound to be one that's ideal for him.

i have 2 possibles.
a victorinox alox pioneer in keeping with the gardening interest as it has a pruning blade and a saw.

or maybe a case or boker 2 blade copperhead.

Thanks for the good suggestions. I like the SAK idea for utility, but he seems like the sort of guy who would appreciate a sodbuster or stockman, etc.

An alox sak would be my first choice, but a Case mini trapper in CV or a case CV or Queen stockman would be a good choice. And while not quite as attractive as the case and queen line up the us made bucks are great as well.

I would also agree with the Pioneer Pruner. I think that that ALOX model also has a panel on the back that could be engraved with his name or initials. Personal gift = Priceless. I recently bought a Farmer model and had it engraved with my inititals. You "should"score big points with your wife and her father for your thoughtfulness.

Nice idea - I'll persue this. I love SAKs myself, and I could stand to score some points these days!;)

My one concern is he is one of those guys with beefy hands and sausage fingers - I hope mere nail nicks will work.

A Buck 55 is A) a GREAT pocketknife, B) very easy to open for the sausage fingered, C) rather classy and classic at the same time, and D) very pocketable.

I second the Queen recommendation. I have and handle tons of knives and the one I carry is a Queen--about a 50-60 dollar one.

What about a Buck 301 Stockman? Good attention to detail. Easy to sharpen and sharp out of the box. It's a a big knife, 4" closed. Buck also makes the 303 Cadet, a smaller stockman that he might find fits in his pocket better.

A lot of folks on the traditional knives forum complain that Queen has good steel but too many of them are not ground properly out of the box. And the D2 steel is a cast iron bear to sharpen.

Hmm, not a knife guy... Get him one of those folding utility knives with replaceable blades -- he'll probably abuse (and love) it, you won't feel bad about him ruining a good knife, you'll save money and everyone will be happier.

While I like Queen knives, I'd avoid getting him one unless he knows how to reprofile edges, because they come dull and obtuse.

A SAK or Case will serve him well.

sodbuster,,,u can even have it engraved at knifeworks.com....check them out,,,
