Hey guys, I have a roommate who has never had a pocketknife until I gave him one of my crummy schrade extreme assisted openers. The reason I gave it to him was because the knife is SO bad and opens way too easily when not intended.

So this Christmas I was wanting to get him a knife that would hold up and still be a cool and fun knife for him to carry and keep for a long time. Needs to be one handed opening, have a pocket clip, and be a medium EDC size.

My thoughts so far have been the Spyderco Persistence, CRKT Drifter, Ka Bar ZK, and some various kershaw models. Trying to keep it around $30-$40, thanks for any input!

How's about a Kershaw Zing?

I have both the Persistence and Drifter (I prefer the stainless frame-lock version of the Drifter myself) and either would be a great gift idea. I'd also recommend the Boker Plus Hyper, small Buck Vantage Select, anything SAK, Spyderco Kiwi 3, Ontario RAT-1 and/or some kind of Rough Rider slippie...

Those were just the things that he did like about the knife I gave him. I was basically just saying it didn't sound like he wanted a traditional pocket knife.

I think he would like a persistence, good size and weight, plus they are made real nice for the price. The zing would be a great option too, might get the orange scale version! Thanks for your advice.

Maybe out of your criteria, but the new Leatherman Sidekick is easily found around 33 bucks. It has a locking blade, but other tools your roomy may like. It also has a pocket clip.

Nice, I never really thought about a multi tool.

In addition to what's been recommended so far, I would add the Spyderco Tenacious, Buck Vantage Select (small or large), Kershaw Leek, and Ka-Bar Dozier (which comes in orange, by the way). All under $40 (some under 30), and all highly-rated knives.

I'm partial to the OD-1 Kershaw for a nice smooth knife. I know it's a little higher but the SOG Flash is a nice assisted opener that's a little bigger and a great cutter. I've been carrying a Kershaw OSO Sweet and love it. It's cheap - $20 on Amazon, and it's sharp and assisted and is a good size. I also carry a CRKT Lift-Off 2 some that is very similar, but a better steel and more expensive.

I'm mulling over the same problem right now and my son thinks one of my FRN Centofante or Delicas would be a good choice, too.

I really like the orange Ka Bar Dozier, that might be the one I go with! Thanks for the help.

The OSO Sweet would be a neat little blade as well, I wish I had enough funds to spend 60 bucks on a Delica as a gift. I am a student and work part time, so that would be a lot, haha. Thanks

I have two of the Kabar Dozier knives. They're surprisingly nice given what I paid for them. Light, sharp, and durable. Look around and you can get them for like $20 or so.
