If by pocketknife, you mean a knife to be carried in your pocket as opposed to clipped to it, nothing beats a Victorinox IMO. The rounded edges blend into your pocket perfectly, and the value is unbeatable.
FYI I don't even own a Victorinox currently, so this isn't speaking from a point of bias. I carry a large Benchmade clipped on my pocket.
If you want something with a bit more class, a higher end Case would be nice... you could even try and shop for a used custom.
I've found that the Spyderco Gayle Bradley is pretty versatile. It's kind of dressy, but at the same time can withstand hard use. The thin grind makes it a great slicer, but the M4 steel makes it tough. The blade shape is great for general purpose, too; it has a decent tip for piercing as well as a good amount of belly where it widens out.
