Here is a new article that tests some knives in different price ranges: Pocket Knives for Emergencies Review. With Christmas coming up, I think that I'll need to put a new knife on my list and leave it on my desk in the hopes that the wife will find it and not buy me socks again this year.

Thanks for pointing it out. Somewhat lame if you ask me... But nice reading anyway.

Nice read. Interesting article for those who don't know much about higher-end knives. I honestly wouldn't mind getting a Gerber from a relative for Christmas. I think they get a bad reputation, but for $30 what more can you expect? When I was young I carried one for 5-6 years and I beat the living sh*t out of that thing. Never failed me.

If anyone wants to go cheap with a gift knife, I think the best bet is always a Victorinox or Wenger SAK. You can even get the OHT models if you want to get fancy. And even with a clip (Sentinel)! And several choices of colors. Opinels are nice also but they don't fit that well as a gift.

You got it "gunfight" as 20 years or so ago all I carried was a Gator Folder - PE and wore a couple of them out and I still have 3 Gators in one of my Safes NIB's and a couple of there Sheath Gators with N.W.T.F. stamped on the blade (only 2 that I know of ) and I guess my Sons will get them when I am gone and sell them to a Pawn Shop for $5.00 ~~ lol """ at least I won't know about it or my other Knives and "items".!!

If you work on your feet, good socks are appreciated....

Back on topic, I like the realistic review of the Gerber/BG knife, and the mention of Opinel.

It would be nice if there was a way for all of us to link to this article when somebody posts one of those "Inexpensive EDC for a Beginner"-type threads.

I think the RAT-1 should have been in there, though...

Not a bad article. Given this is a knife forum, though, there are bound to be a lot of differing opinions on the blade selection though. ;)

Gerber's changed a lot over the years. I don't know how old you are, but unless you're pretty young, (say, less than 20,) then the knife you owned as a kid was made by "old" Gerber. They're a completely different company now.
