Pocket Pal Vs. Peanut

Hello--This is my first post, though I've been lurking for a while.

After years of trial and error, including an expensive tactical phase, I've decided that all I really need for my day to day are two blades, one small, and one "not quite as small."

I've narrowed my choice to two knives, the Victorinox Pocket Pal and the Case Peanut (with CV blades).

I've spent the past few days walking around with each, and just can't decide which I prefer. Each has pros/cons. The pros for the Pocket Pal are stainless blades (less worry in the humid summer), lighter weight, and cheaper to replace if I lose it.

Pros for Peanut are...well, it's prettier. Mine seems to be able to get a sharper edge that the Vic, though as to practicality both cut well, and that old-timer nostalgia factor that I find "cooler" than the utilitarian Pocket Pal.

So...I'd really love your opinions on both these knives, which you would personally carry, and why.

Thank you, and I'm glad to finally be part of the forum.

Hey,welcome to Bladeforums! For pure utility,a Victorinox anything cannot be beat. But for small pocketknife work the Peanut works for me.Mine sports Damascus blades and is my favorite pocketknife period.

Welcome to the forum SubSpace.

You are faced with a tough choice. My first suggestion is to rotate the two knives like you have been doing. Or just carry them both at the same time.

If I had to choose one, I would go with the Peanut for the following reasons:

1. I'm a big fan of Case knives.

2. The Peanut has more character and will look better with age. Especially if it has bone handles.

3. You are supporting one of the oldest American knife companies still in existence.

They are both fine knives and in the end, you are the only one who can make this decision. Good luck.

SubSpace, there's only one way to go here; Case peanut.

Now, let me warn you, I'm just a wee bit biased, but the peanut is available in CV steel, which holds a better edge than the pocket pal. Not to mention the wide range of materials that the scales come in. But be warned, the peanuts can be habit forming. Some people began with just one, and ended up with a small collection. I myself used to carry a larger knife, but my dad carried a little peanut his whole life because he said it was all he really needed. When he passed away, his peanut was on my dresser, and one day I put it in my pocket. Don't really know why, maybe just to have dad close in a way. My regular edc at that time was a Buck 301 stockman.

Before I knew it, I was using the peanut, and was amazed at how that flat ground thin carbon blade sliced through stuff. Next thing I know is I have four of them, and I'm hooked. Maybe another one in my future, I'm looking at a stag with damascus to go with my amber bone/damascus one.

You need to come over to the traditional forum. We like peanuts over there.

Carl.

Peanut. A Case CV Red Bone peanut is in my pocket all the time when I'm at work. It's a great knife. Tiny powerhouse. Thinking man's knife.

Though...if its not in my pocket a Vic SAK (Super Tinker or Alox Farmer) is.

Watch out for jackknife(Carl),he's the Peanut pusher!:D
Lol yep. And don't forget to thank him afterwards:D

I'd go for the peanut as well. You already have one with CV blades but if the summer humidity is a concern, you could get one of the stainless models for particularly swampy days.

I would also put a Vic Classic, Rambler, or Manager on my keys. No reason not to have one imo.

They're both great, and I own both.
But I wouldn't carry either. Why not? No lanyard hole or bail.

I lose everything that's not tied down. :(

I'll also vote for the Peanut.

Functionally, both knives are even IMHO.

As for "character," I'd say the case wins hands down.

Thank you for the replies--

Your thoughts are mirroring my own. Functionally, both knives are great. But I have this romantic notion of a knife growing old along with me, the steel wearing down as I do, but still staying razor sharp as, with luck, I will as well. Of the two, the Case will definitely age better.

That's a tough call. I personally carry my cv peanut more, but I love all my vics. So much utility in such a small package, plus easy care. I'd rotate them according to what strikes your fancy, but don't be surprised if that peanut finds its way into your pocket most of the time. And be careful, they multiply very quickly.

I second the invitation. Folks who've figured it out hang out in Traditional.

As far as the original question, it is plain that either will work just fine. IMO the Case has more character and is, therefore, more fun to carry. YMMV.
