I have a little ceramic dogbone I carry around for sharpening....but I saw a small suare shaped sharpener with 2 crossed crocksticks inside (looks like you just place the blade in and draw....Do these work, are they any good?? Thanks!

I got one of those with a filet knife I bought. I keep it in my tackle box and it's not too bad for quick touch-ups. I bought a similar sharpener from Ace Hardware that's much better though. You can pop out the little carbide (?) sharpeners and flip them over to double the life of it. I use that to touch-up kitchen knives, broadhead blades, leatherman knife blade, etc. but I have never used it on any high quality steel. It's good for sharpening scissors too.

Never used one of the pull through sharpener that sharpened my knife to my satisfaction. My favorite pocket sharpener is a Spyderco Duo, medium stone on one side and fine on the other. Chris

The crossed sticks sharpen only one angle .I've used for many years, an EZE-LAP sharpener ,a 1/4" x4" diamond coated rod that fits inside it's handle .The diamond will sharpen anything !! even carbide drills ! EZE-LAP now has a series of folding sharpeners of different diamond grits .I have a selection but my original one sharpens most of my knives.

I have one of those little ceramic dogbone things in my Becker Crewmans' sheath pouch, and it is good for touching up. I like the DMT diamond sharpeners too. I have the one that opens up like a butterfly knife. They make even smaller ones too.

I carry a piece of 600 grit W/D paper, which works great for Mora's and convexed blades, but usually just stropping the blade will keep them sharp during use.

Same as Longbow for me. I usually have a double DMT butterfly sharpener as well.

I keep hearing good things about those dog-bones, gonna hafta pick one up. I sure like the size. Right now I'm using some medium Arkansas stones, 1"x3"x3/8", I got 'em cheap from BladeMatrix. They're coarse enough to work quick, but still get a nice clean shaving edge. Don't see them on their site now, good thing I bought 3 :D
http://www.bladematrix.tv/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=162 <--- They do have Spyderco replacement rods, medium or fine, on sale for $4 each. Break one in half maybe?

I only use mecanical or pull through sharpener on cheap or maybe a kitchen knife.I use a small medium grit diamond steel and ceramic rod when out doors.

Does anyone know if the dogbone sharpener is available in a fine grit(white) the one I use is dark grey works but not as fine as I like.

I have a dogbone, about as inexpensive and basic as it gets, good for small pack.

I have a lanksy mini-croc stick which I like due to the fact it has a wide area for the balde, which allows for different angles and edge work.
The sticks can also be removed and used by themselves, or placed in a slot side x side and used for hooks and points.
I've been pleased with it. it's a little larger than the dogbone, so wouldn't work in something as small as a PSK, on a keyring, or lanyard.

Some of the other pull through models have narrow slots, and you are confined to that angle, and that angle only.

In reality, anyone could just buy a single repalacement ceramic rod for any of the popular models (not too long) 4" or 5" would suffice, and it would do a fine job for most touch ups in the field.

For compactness and EDC the Dogbone gets the nod.

I'll second those EZE-LAP sharpeners. They're about the size of a short pen, and look like one when closed. They work great. Initially, they seem pretty coarse, but they smooth out a bit after use. Usually, this is all I bring along.

If I want to get a little more fancy, I also bring along a 4.5"x3/8" ceramic stick. These things are really cheap from places like SMKW or Bladematrix, and I usually use them like a very finely abrasive steel. Great for putting a fine microbevel on an edge.
