pocket sheath for a folder?

I gotta admit, one of the things that has always most drawn me towards the tactical folders was the pocket clip. I never could stand the old SAKs, Stockmen, etc. that inevitably slide down horizontally in my pocket. Hence the reason I was starting to carry small fixed blades most of the time before I turned 12.

What I was wondering was if there's any way to obtain a sheath for folders that would keep them vertical, ie; a William Henryish set up? Is there anyone that makes one similar, or even a way to make my own, etc.? If I can ever find one, I'm pretty sure my SAK Adventurer will make it back into my EDC rotation rather than living in my truck.

You can purchase just the sheath from william henry or you might be able to get one of the BF member who makes sheaths out of kydex or leather to make one custom for you.

Or try the cheap fix . . . make one out of wool felt (or a decent synthetic with some texture). Take a piece of felt 1 to 2 inches wide (depending on breadth of knife) by 10 inches long (again, depending of length of knife). Fold the fabric, but not in half . . . this is the key. Using 10 inches as the example, fold the fabric to create a four inch pouch, and whip stitch the edges. This leaves an extra two inches of fabric at the top. Why? Drop it in your pocket and you'll see. That knife will never fall horizontal. The friction of the wool against the inside of your pocket, particularly with the extra tab of fabric at the top, holds the knife vertical. Is it a quick draw? No. But it keeps the knife vertical and protected. I pull mine out by the tap of fabric, flip, and the knive drops out. Cheap and easy - two of my favorite adjectives.

Maybe find a sheath with a belt clip and remove the flap and carry it inside the pocket. just a thought.

Have you considered kydex? Depending on the fit of pants you wear, it is possible to have even a strait (fixed) blade sitting inside comfortably. Kydex can be made to any outline shape and desired tightness. Because of its stiff properties, one an even "reholster" the folder while the sheath is still sitting inside the pocket! I have carried strait knives made by the Dozier shop in their standard horizontal kydex in my front pants and jacket pockets quite comfortably. I am able to draw and resheath these knives. BUT with great caution and practice. I don' t recommend this to everyone. As for folders, you can have one made in a rectangular shape with one corner of the top shaved off at a 45 degree angle. The thumb uses this as a launching pad while the other fingers grasp the exposed part of folder showing from sheath. The ability for this type sheath to work properly depends on the shape and size your of folder.

For carrying in jeans, try slashing open the inside-bottom of your watchpocket and clipping the folder inside your watchpocket. I've been carrying that way for some time, with the following advantages (for larger folders):
- Better access to side-pockets.
- Better access to folder when seated.
- Folder is located forward of your hip - fewer collisions with furniture, etc.

Hope this helps!

Just wanted to let y'all know I found the solution to my problem.

It cost me $7.50 in a trinket/ souvenier shop, and it's called the "pocket peeker" Basically it's made to clip your keyring to your pocket, but of course it was easy to translate that to the lanyard hole of my SAK.

I had my choice of a fairy, a butterfly, a cowboy boot or a happy sun. I chose the happy sun cause it looked less likely to snag on crap than the cowboy boot, and ALOT less girly than fairies and butterflies. So far it works great. I'm carryin' my 630 Skirmish to penetrate run away plow blades and my SAK for the light handy stuff, what else could I possibly need? :D

FWIW, if I hadn't found that I probably woulda done the thing with sewing a pocket sheath with the wool lining. Lifters stuff looks fantastic, but perhaps a bit extravagant for a $20.00 knife.

Funny you should ask. The most recent AG Russell catalog just arrived today. In it you'll find leather knife pouches just like you're looking for. The pouches are black leather with a fold-over flap and are available in two different sizes.

Happy shopping,
Bob
