I've looked at some of the styles that have been put up in this forum and liked what I've seen.
My goal is to make a pocket sheath for a Benchmade 710 that will keep the knife almost vertical (just laying back about 10-15 degrees) in the pocket for ease of draw. I want to be able to remove the pocket clip but still keep the knife in the same orientation, and close to the edge of the pocket, but a bit lower so it doesn't protrude and be visible.
Would some of you sheath makers have any suggestions for setting up a pattern for this before I cut the leather? I've made many different sheaths before, but never a pocket sheath, and don't have a clue as to how to go about planning the size other than experiments with cardboard in my own pockets!
I plan to use fairly thick leather for the front, 7-8oz, and not contour it around the knife so as not to allow the knife to imprint on the pants. I will contour the back side (the side facing the leg) in order to secure the knife in the position I want. I also plan to make some ventilation holes through the side 'wings' just to keep a bit cooler.
I welcome any suggestions you can offer. Thanks!
