Pocket Slip-cases

Some years ago I had the good fortune to find a Ron Lake folder on a gun-show table. The scales are pre-ban elephant ivory. We did a bit of dickering and I emerged as the new owner.

I don't have any interest in knives to look at---meaning that every knife I have is carried to a greater-or-lesser degree. So as to preserve the ivory, I made a little slip-case out of commercial buck-tan. I did so because there didn't seem to be a source for such things.

A recent search for an item of this sort still seems to come up largely empty. The ones that can be found, such as the offerings from AG Russell, are all more complex than what I've been used to over the years.

Give me feedback, please, regarding your thoughts about such items. Are there very few on the market because there's little demand for such things? Or is this simply something that's fallen through the cracks? What features are must-haves?

I have contact with crafters so that it would be possible to make offerings of such things if there seems to be a market.

Your comments are eagerly sought and I thank you in advance!!

CRK makes them for the Sebenzas, I have mine in my pocket right now.

I like to keep things simple. I devote a pocket to my knives and nothing else goes in there. So I really don't need to use a slip case to keep them in good condition. But if I were to use a slip case, I'd probably use the one CRK makes for Sebenzas.

Perhaps interesting, I actually got a follow up e-mail from KSF today promoting their pocket slip for pocket knives. I was sent this as a follow up to purchasing a Northwoods knife from them, and they actually offer a couple different items similar to what you are describing. I don't feel there is a lot of demand for these, but I like the one I have, and am glad to know that KSF has them.

Thanks for your reply. The CRK offering is much the same as what I've made up in the past. I tend to carry a wallet/cardcase and change and my knife in one front pocket and my 'phone and keys on the other side. I simply don't have enough pockets to devote one to just my knife. My 'Little Friend' tends to be a 1911 so that has to be taken into account as well.

The KSF offering may be just about right for a daily user but doesn't quite fit with a 'Gentleman's Knife'

I looked at the CRK but ultimately was unwilling to shell out that amount of money. KSF has much more cost effective offerings and different designs from which to choose. Have a look there.

Is $25 really that much money? I mean, if you're using one to keep an expensive pocket knife safe in your pocket from keys or coins or whatever, $25 is relatively cheap. That is my opinion, only.

Just out of curiosity, how many pockets do you have? My slacks usually have four pockets . . . LFP, RFP, LRP and RRP. I carry my knife exclusively in my LFP, my keys and change in my RFP plus several small accessories clipped to it (Leatherman Micra/Peanut Lighter, AAA Flashlight), my wallet in my LRP, and my comb in my RRP. I carry my mobile phone in a holster on my belt because it's gotten too damn big to stick in my pocket anymore.

Daily I mostly go with sweats or athletic-type shorts---although I'm decidedly not what you'd call 'athletic'. Neither style has a rear pocket. I agree that $25 is too much for a 'user' pocket-slip. Using a 'Morocco-type' leather, properly finished, I had in mind to go for a target of $15. Conceivably Shark or Ostrich or such would be more.

I have a Kimber 1911 on my left-side belt and a double mag carrier on my right. (I'm left-handed.)

What do YOU think regarding slip-case pricing?

I second the KSF Pocket Slips. I trust my William Henry to it. Seems to me it's perfect for a "gentleman's folder" so I'm not quite sure what you are looking for.

I would say that if we were talking about $40 or $50, I'd simply source some leather online, and make my own. But for $25, I have a sweet calf-skin leather slip that's protecting my large Insingo and its carbon fiber inserts. My knife is kept looking great, and so when this wears out, I would definitely buy another. Also, let me be fair, I did not pay for this pocket slip, a fantastic, fantastically generous member I purchased this knife from tossed it for me. I know leather goods eventually wear out, so I sourced where I'd pick up a replacement when this one is done. So, for me, $25 is just fine for what I'm getting, though I understand that others may feel differently.

I liked the CRK one, but wanted it in black. So I sent the dimensions and images to a leather company and they made me an exact replica in black leather for around $20. I would contact a custom leather shop and see what they can do for you.

For small knives, William Henry knives makes nice slipcases with a clip out of ostrich leather.

Frankly I'm surprised the slips are as inexpensive as they are considering each one is hand made. I have several leather slips from KSF.

They also make less expensive ones without the clip made from sting ray, those look really cool.

From their website, the Sting ray ones go for about 20-30 dollars and the leather ones are 35-45.

Michael Walker and Ron Lake usually included an Arne Mason case with their folders. Arne's work is impeccable. He can make one up to fit your custom Lake. They are not $25.00 though...

I've used slipcases and pouches for years. My knives look as good as new too.

I use my Sebenza slipcase for a few of my knives but it's kind of flimsy and the knives fit very loosely in it.

Lately I prefer the slipcases from KnivesShipFree. I have several so that all of my folders fit at least one. It's the only thing that will keep a knife from getting scratched and relatively free from lint.

What people don't realize is that it makes the knife more comfortable to carry too. It also breaks up the profile of the knife in your pocket. They practically make an average size EDC knife disappear.

I won't just put a knife in my pocket--it's sort of like those who carried handkerchiefs all the time.
