How well do they work? Tools like that Burketek Pocket wrench and its many configurations have always interest me but I have never been able to play with one. After see that Skinth solutions makes a pouch that fits a 91mm SAK and a pocket that looks like it could house a small pocket wrench, it has got me in the market for one.

I wanted to like these little one piece multi tools so bad. I drooled over Atwood's tools for months, but never could get the nerve to pony up the cash. They are so cool looking and innovative I was just plain drawn to them.

However, I got a hold of a friends to play with, couldn't tell which model, but it had the box wrenches, scraper/pry tool/ and bottle cap opener. Tinkered with it on the boat, with my bicycle, and my truck's battery cables. I couldn't make this thing work with any of the nuts on any off these vehicles. I got to thinking about it and how often is the nut you need turned on a flat surface with 3" of 360 deg clearance? Almost never I found. Not to mention they are easy to slip off when applying any real torque on a nut.

I actually eyeballed a Leatherman one piece tool in Academy today and had to convince myself not to buy it.

They are sexy, and some like the Atwood are very well made and you have to appreciate the craftsmanship and innovation that went into them. I found them of almost no use except as a cap lifter, and my daily carry Victorinox has one of those.

The main concern with me is they look so short. Can you really get any leverage on a tight nut using such a small tool?

No, I couldn't even get my battery cable on my truck loose with the one I tried, and those things aren't torqued down very tight at all.
