I've noticed the spyderco spoon clips are great as is the bench MADE grips clip. It seems alot of clips tear up the pocket . Any thoughts or experience with htis

I would say that they typical Benchmade and Spyderco clips are seriously outdated. ZT may be the worst. They are all guilty of putting clips on their knives that do a good job of clipping the knife to clothes but are horrible in the hand. Too many manufacturers make this sexy ass knife and then slap a 1995 clip on it and call it good. At this point all $150+ knife’s clips should at least be recessed into the scale at the contact point and attached with a single screw. And for the love of anything holy, don’t put a logo on the clip.

yep. I own many knives I don't like to carry due to this. emersons and cold steels typically being the worst with their texture of their scales. yeah I can fix it, just dont like too.

I also highly dislike clips that are way too tight and impossible to put in the pocket one handed as well as one too loose to keep the knife from moving all over the pocket. it's a fine art and balance to get it just right.....but I also realize others want different things with a clip than me, so no way can the maker do it right for everyone.

I dont mind older design clips. I'm so used to them I dont notice hot spots they create. plus Im ambi so I use both hands when cutting so if I really dislike the way it feels I switch to southpaw for that knife.

Yup, hate it! For me it comes down to the texturing on the handle scales that cause the most damage. Some clips are just so darn tight and low profile that they cause the knife handle to scrape along the under side of my pants pocket as I pull them out. Not fun.

This is why I've come to prefer small blades. Like the Spyderco Manbug and alike. No need for a pocket clip art all, just slip it into the fifth pocket with a Paracord lanyard attached and voila, nary an issue again.

My Sebenza clip used to ruin my pockets. I put a small o ring on it, now the o ring is between The clip and pocket.

I've noticed that while the clips play a role, the handle material is usually the main perpetrator of ripping up my pants. Like Spyderco's G10, that stuff really messes up my pockets even though the clip retention isn't ridiculous. On the flip side, my mini Ritter has the strongest clip retention of any of my folders yet it won't destroy my pocket because the scales are some sort of FRN/Valox.

I've found I much prefer a clip with more retention than one without(looking at you ZT). I especially like the Benchmade Black Oxide/USA clips, they feel much better in hand compared to their deep carry clips. I swapped a deep carry clip onto my mini Ritter and after about 2 hours I switched back.

Have to agree about the G-10, CS and Emerson in particular -- I don't have any problem with Spyderco's G-10 tearing up pockets, though. It's easy enough to sand down any harsh corners though and that's how I fixed my CS and Emerson handles. As for clips, I've always had to re-bend my CS ones as they were way too tight. No problem with any others. I've never found any clips uncomfortable in the hand in my use; maybe if I were mending nets or whittling for hours they would, but I have other knives without clips for that.

No clips for me either. I've had em tear up pockets, scratch furniture, catch on something and pull the knife from my pocket ......... These days pocketknives get dropped into my pocket. #oldschoolcool

I was in the same boat with Emerson- I couldn't even get my Endeavor out of the pocket. I just took the clip off and carry it in a soft knife pouch on my belt- which totally negates the wave feature, but hey- the wave makes a great thumb rest. Otherwise on the whole I like clips, since I usually do inside the waistband carry. They can create hot spots in the hand, and some are better than others at this. FWIW, I'm not crazy about the Spyderco wire clip. It probably relieves the hot spot issue but I just don't like the way it's attached to the handle- looks too flimsy, though it's probably not.

Best way to avoid any clip issues is to carry a fixed blade!

It was even less time than that for me. On a Griptilian, I prefer the standard USA marked clip. A BM deep carry works best on my Benchmade 531 and the stock split arrow clip shines on Benchmade's Volli. YMMV.

Unless you are in dress clothes. Then what?

Luckily for me that isn't a thing. I work in car sales, but slacks can be chinos and khakis, and all mine have fifth pockets. Tommy Hilfiger chinos, check them out...
I as of yet to see a pair of khakis that have a fifth pocket. That is something I would like. I wear khakis most of the time.

I am finding that I still prefer something with a clip over a knife riding with my keys. The last thing I need is to reach in my pocket for my keys and have a $150 knife end up on the ground, never to be seen again. Even worse is having my keys disappear when I pull my knife out. No thanks.

Exactly. Did you see my recommendation? Tommy Hilfiger Chinos, they come in regular fit and slim. They have a very low profile fifth pocket which aligns with where a belt will ride so it's almost hidden, and the seems are short so it doesn't stand out. You really should check them out. I get them for about $30 at the outlet mall and they fit fantastically while looking great!
