hello all, i've been awol for a few months i suppose, school really hit the fan this semester and ive been doing a lot of work on that. however, i want to get more into the forum again, so ill probably be hangin around more often. but im at a little bit of a crossroads as far as carry knives go.

for a number of years ive had a gerber ABS 3.0, which i just love, the only problem is that the liner lock has gotten worn out and wont hold the blade open, making it rather dangerous and unreliable:grumpy: . so, i have found myself in the market for a new knife of roughly the same design/type under about $80 with a blade not much longer than 3". ive been looking at a gerber mini covert since ive had good experience with gerber in the past, but i wouldnt mind shelling out a little more dough for a bit higher end;) . any suggestions?

Skydog, I'm not sure what that Gerber design is but I've been carrying a Kershaw Leek (alum frame) and like it very much, Benchmade also has some nice 3" IMHO.

Have you thought about a Spyderco Endura? Maybe a Delica? These are good quality knives that come razor sharp, have great blade steel, and are backed by a really stand up company. They can be had anywhere on the net for about 50 or 60 smackers.
If i needed a locking one hander, then I would carry a Spydie. I just find that a good alox handled SAK suits my needs better for an EDC. I can get it sharper than a razor, it has a number of tools, I can't break it, and it doesn't scare people if i need to whip it out to do something. It's just a "pretty swiss army knife";)
Good luck, and good to see ya posting again:)

thanks for the replies guys. ive actually looked at those knives as possibilities before, but still havent settled on anything. i liked the spydercos, but i prefer liner locks, they just feel more convenient to me when im using them. spyderco's liner locks were also a little large for what im looking for. i'd been looking at a benchmade 556 mini griptillian, so i think thats probably what i'll end up gettin. and jake, i would probably do the same as you and carry just a SAK were it not for the rather nasty increase in aggrivated assaults and armed robberies on campus, but as it is i would rather have a little something extra just in case.

While it was for sale, the Spyderco Delica in ZDP-189 retailed for around $65. I hear that they go for $150+ nowadays. Not that I'd ever sell mine. What a knife!

I bought two Spyderco folders last year and haven't bought any folders since -- no reason to. If I were to do it all over again, I'd buy two more Spyderco folders. Good steel, good heat treat, great ergonomics, and Sal is a man with class. If I were looking for something more conventional in appearance, I'd go for a Buck 110.

Of course, as you may have seen from the above, I'm a lockback fan. I can't help you with liner locks.

I'd like to have a Spydie or two myself. I'd like to have either the Military or the Police, whichever is the largest, one of these days I'll have to ask.:o
Me Likey Big Knives!  :D ;)

All the info about the Spydies is true, and the 556 Griptilian is a really good knife too.

From someone who has a load of Spydercos and Benchmades including a 556.

I am however bummed that I do not have a Delica ZDP-189. I see one close on the horizon though...

The ZDP-189 truly is all that and a bucket of grits. I'm continually impressed by this little knife with the plastic purple handle. (Sal says it's burgundy. I say it's purple. My friends say...well, never mind that.)

Yvsa, you want the Manix. That happens to be the other Spydie that I own. And yes, it's quite large. :)

Thanks Dave. I checked it out, 3-3/4" S30V blade with G-10 handles.
Somehow I thought the Police or Military was larger, 4" blades?

And I forgot that I have the little upswept Spydie Moran with the VG10 blade that just never goes dull, gotta love 'em!!!! :D

Well, let's say the Manix is heftier. (Beefier?). Whatever, you'll know it when you pick it up.

I don't have a Spydie in VG-10. I figure that I ought to fix that one of these paychecks.

You really oughta, Dave. I have a Rescue 93 that was my first knife in VG 10. I find it just about perfect for my needs. It takes a great edge, doesn't stain easily, and sharpens easily. This works for me as i don't like really hard edges, because I strop my knives almost daily.

and jake, i would probably do the same as you and carry just a SAK were it not for the rather nasty increase in aggrivated assaults and armed robberies on campus, but as it is i would rather have a little something extra just in case.

Be careful out there, bud. A lot of people think of campuses as safe, but there are so many places for bad guys to hide. Couple that with college admin not telling you a thing so that they don't lose face and a pretty far leftist view for the most part on "weapons". I know that my senior year we had a girl in a dorm night next to my then fiance's that was attacked, raped, stabbed, and set afire...and the &*^%& university would not tell us what they knew! We weren't looking for names, but was this an isolated event? Did she know them? Was there a crazy out there getting girls? My wife's dorm already had a problem with peepers as it was a sorority dorm. People were scared $h|tless, and the university wouldn't tell anybody anything:mad:
As one of the guys that was always around the dorm and trusted, i got roped into walking girls to and from class and cars at night when I wasn't working. For personal protection I carried a leatherman Wave for it's one handed blade, non threatening looks, and blunt weight. I also packed a small maglite on my hip. I figured that getting hit in the face with the end of that little light might make the attacker think twice.
I carried a 15" AK in my jeep, and my wife to be got a 12" Siru to keep handy in the little trash bin in the side of her car door.
Be careful out there:)

It's nice to know the Buck 110 still gets mentioned.

A secured knife available to the driver of a vehicle, would seem to be nearly mandatory for safety. I can imagine a roll over, or a water immersion, and having the seat belts hang someone up who needs to get out fast. Leaving a vehicle quickly is a real life possibility, and a blade clipped in place or velcroed or otherwise stable but handy is a good thing.

The Spyderco Delica and Endura have always been great knives, but now, they're even better.

Delica 4s have all the features of knives over twice as expensive. $42 at New Graham.

Ya' might consider CRKT. The higher end ones are still using AUS-8, and they have stainless steel liner locks. To me this is important. The Cantina is the only place on the forums that I'm brave enough to mention it, but...I fully wholeheartedly and one hundred percentedly believe that stainless liners wear MUCH MUCH slower than titanium. coming outta the gate, they may not be quite as secure as titanium, but after a year or so of use, this rapidly changes. my buddy has a small M-16 that I gave him years ago, and he uses and abuses it daily in the construction field, Every day he pries things with it, uses it as a screwdriver, and even sharpens a few pencils now and then....;)

My wife's has the same model M-16 for slightly longer than he's had his, still never a problem with it.

In any case, the liner of the M-16s have held up better than all of the Lonewolves, Emersons,Spydercos, and Benchmades I've had in the same time span.

They also have that guard for fast opening, since you mentioned the SD aspect. Of course you could wave a Spydie too, if you could get over the backlock.

Also, As you mentioned, the BM Axises are fantastic bargains too. Can't hardly go wrong in any case.

geez, there are so many good knives out there, its hard to make decisions like this. the crkt m-16 looks good, and its cheaper than the benchmade = big selling point for college kid. either way, i figure i'll have a good knife.

A lot of people think of campuses as safe, but there are so many places for bad guys to hide. Couple that with college admin not telling you a thing so that they don't lose face and a pretty far leftist view for the most part on "weapons".

i most certainly take the safety of myself and others very seriously, esp. since im living in the middle of downtown atlanta. i'm always on yellow alert walking around campus, especially after dark, and always carrying a knife. i believe the blade limit on state schools is 2", but i figure that i'd rather take the risk of getting caught with a bigger knife than need the extra inch when the time comes. also, the campus police are really cool guys with a good grip on things going on around here, so i figure if i get called out on it, i'll tell the truth behind my reasons and hope the cop sides with me.

Be careful out there.

Thanks, Jake. it's nice to know people out there care about and support you in these situations.
