My Grandmother was released from the hospital yesterday and I'm going to stay with her for a week or two. The upside? Instead of rolling hills filled with Tumbleweeds and Sagebrush I'm now in mountains full of Pines. :D

Yesterday I went on a walk and stumbled upon this:

I don't think that it's really good fatwood (smells strongly of Pine), but it ignites almost instantly and sizzles as it burns. For my first find that's good enough for me.

The reason this thread is titled the way it is? Well, I went on my hike with nothing but a Gerber Multi-Tool and a Mini-Mag light (my work EDC), but I managed to bring all of this home:

For scale reference my iPhone:

I stuffed my cargo pockets, front pockets, back pockets, and the pocket on my sweater as full as humanly possible. It's not all pure fatwood, but I wasn't able to baton the other junk off successfully.

Still, I'm rather happy. When the rain lets up I may take one of my Khuks, a backpack, and grab some more.

Good news of your granny getting released! Good score on the fatwood. That box will start a load of fires.

Considering that Ring Around the Rosie was a Plague nursery rhyme and your talking about hospitals - be happy you have the fatwood in your pockets.

It seems tha I need more education on fatwood. All that I have used reeked of pine. This is not what I should be using? A friend of mine gave me a piece 10"x15" that I have been saving. Should I section it up and put it someplace to dry more? I carry a small piece in my firemaking kit, but have never had to use it.

That's the stuff, as far as I am aware :)

I love that smell... reminds me of being in the bush. With that small piece in your firemaking kit, you can scrape off a fine powder to take a spark, or shave off fine slivers to help sustain a flame once you get some tinder (such as birch bark) going using a fire steel.

I had read at one point in my travels that fatwood smelled like turpentine (spelling?) and so that's what had me thinking mine wasn't really saturated.

TF, I wanted an interesting title but just couldn't bring myself to make some lame joke about the thick bulge of wood in my pants, how fat it was, or how saturated it was with life juice. So I went with Posies, and to be honest, while I know the history behind the rhyme, I didn't expect it to be mentioned....

Nice score - I like to hear about people using only a multi-tool or just a single tool while out and about. I'm not one to carry a bunch of knives with me so I appreciate the simplicity of it.

Nice work - Glad to hear your grandmother is out of the hospital. I hope all is well.
