Just a bit confused when it is described for a folder to have the pocket clip arranged so that it is in a "point up" or "point down" position. Does this refer to the knife when it is closed or if the knife would hypothetically be open?

What is the definition?

The way I use it, "point down" means when the knife is closed, you clip it in your pocket and the blade is pointing down. So the pivot is at the top. Point up of course is the opposite. A lot of us don't like carrying point up in case of a nasty surprise when you put your hand in your pocket, if the knife opens just a bit. Other folks prefer it.

It's when it's closed.

I know, fairly ambiguous, and I don't like it either. I much prefer "pivot up" or "pivot down", since the pivot at least doesn't change orientation in the pocket. A blade on the other hand can have no tip, or multiple tips, like the Captain.
