Here's a shot of a hunter I just finished.

Blade is forged 4.5" w2
Handle is claro walnut
Guard is 416 ss
OAL is around 9.5"

I think this knife has a little Rob Hudson to it, maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part :).

I like it.

I've never used a W2 blade. How does it compare, performance wise, to steels like 1084, 1095, and O1?

Firstly, great looking knife. :)

Bill Moran used(and, probably still uses)a lot of W2. Basically, it's similar to 1095, with the exception of possibly a little more carbon(varies from .90-1.4%)and the important addition of a little Vanadium. A little Vanadium makes a good difference sometimes.

Coonskinner, you would love W2. It's a good, super high carbon tool steel that takes a wicked edge and holds it well. Oh, and it turns nice patina colors too.

Thanks guys! Danbo hit it on the w2. W2 does seem harder to work (at least harder than w1 :)), I notice it the most when I'm filing in the shoulders. It takes a wicked edge too.

Just to add a little more...........W2, properly heat treated, has some of the smallest grain size going, around 6-9 microns.......meaning it'll go super sharp, my favorite kind of edge!!!! :D

A very nice hunter. Great shape, and the finish looks very good, too.
That walnut fits the style of knife perfectly
:)

Niiiiiice! Sweet knife. Walnut is one of my favorite woods.

Cheers,

Roger

Love that blade, not as sure about the handle though. I personally like more a rounded shape. That's just me though.

You're getting better all the time Matt. You've really picked up on this thing quickly. I think that little trip to the school was money well spent.

Thats a nice classy pattern that I'm sure you'll keep refining as you go. LIke Keith, I also prefer a more rounded contour to the handle. I'd agree on the W-2. I think some recent knives I've made have been W-2. They behave a little like 52100 on the anvil and on the grinder, I'm hoping, in the field as well. Oh yes, its takes a hamon too. Not as good as 1095 / 1084 but better than 52100 / O-1. Good work, keep it up. Jason.

LongRifle,

That is a fantastic looking critter. Can you email me a link to your website too. Thanks.

Jon

Matt,

It looks great!! The finish and grind lines look crisp and clean. I am seeing lots of improvement with every knife. You have me looking over my shoulder:p
