jewel weed, unfortunately, does not 'get rid of' poison ivy. it merely soothes the itching/burning slightly.
there have been many controlled tests (subjects applying either saline solution or jewel weed extract to affected area) and it was proven that it has absolutely no effect in terms of treating poison ivy, or the longevity of the reaction.
the only benefit it gives is a mental placebo effect, and perhaps a slight soothing/local anaesthetic. it could perhaps help neutralize poison ivy if applied within a few minutes of contact -- this is not because its some magical poison ivy counter, but simply because it washes the urushiol off your skin just like any cleansing solution would. soap and water, hand cleaner, vodka, lighter fluid, hell a host of other things would serve the same purpose. you are far more likely of finding something in your pack to neutralize/remove the urushiol than you are hunting around for jewel weed - its not that easy to identify for most people.
if you are applying it after the rash has already appeared it is far too late. believe me. i have poison ivy on my arms as i type this (i always get it, the lot next to us is neglected and even though i spray it regularly is constantly full of it), and i have jewelweed growing in my garden. in the beginnning i bought into the hype, but after seeing it completely ineffective i did some research and found out its the equivalent of an old wives tale.
