So, I decide to take two days off of work for an overnight hiking trip. I have fun and I relax a little bit. I wake up yesterday morning with poison ivy on my arms! My first batch of the summer. I was wondering if you guys have any tricks for getting rid of it! Thanks.

Use Jewel Weed. It is a very common plant. It is a very wet plant that likes watery places and shade. Crush the fresh plant and apply the juice. Let it dry on the affected area. It dries up the poison ivy in a day or two on me and my kids. It can also be used to prevent poison ivy if applied to legs and hand before exposure.

If you have any doubt as to positive ID on jewelweed, then hold a stem of it underwater. The surface of the plant traps a thin layer of air that makes it appear silvery under water, hence the name. I’ve seen people boil it down and freeze the juice into ice cubes. IMO they don’t work as well as the fresh plant.

I once got poison ivy on my hands and from there it got transferred to my… um… you get the picture. One trip to the back forty and a liberal application of JW resolved the affliction. Mac

there is a product out there called "tecnu". if put on within a few hours of contacting poison ivy it works like its magic. smells a little funny though.

before my friend mordachai told me about tecnu I would take more severe (and stupid!) measures to get rid of the poison ivy itch. I'd heat up a butter knife and press it against the poison ivy pustules, burn the oil out. It worked, but it hurt. The tecnu is much better! I recommend it.

I am so tormented by poison ivy with the slightest contact (nothing works) I procurred a few bottles of Kenalog cortisone medication I inject myself before the suffering starts.

This stuff works when NOTHING else will.

Thanks for all the advice guys. back when I was younger (and much dumber) I would cut open the affected area and pour gasoline over it. It worked, but hurt like hell!! Skam, I'm the same way. If I look at poison ivy, I'm getting it.

Hey thanks for saying that for me!

(just hope you can find the tecnu when you need it. JK)

jewel weed, unfortunately, does not 'get rid of' poison ivy. it merely soothes the itching/burning slightly.
there have been many controlled tests (subjects applying either saline solution or jewel weed extract to affected area) and it was proven that it has absolutely no effect in terms of treating poison ivy, or the longevity of the reaction.

the only benefit it gives is a mental placebo effect, and perhaps a slight soothing/local anaesthetic. it could perhaps help neutralize poison ivy if applied within a few minutes of contact -- this is not because its some magical poison ivy counter, but simply because it washes the urushiol off your skin just like any cleansing solution would. soap and water, hand cleaner, vodka, lighter fluid, hell a host of other things would serve the same purpose. you are far more likely of finding something in your pack to neutralize/remove the urushiol than you are hunting around for jewel weed - its not that easy to identify for most people.

if you are applying it after the rash has already appeared it is far too late. believe me. i have poison ivy on my arms as i type this (i always get it, the lot next to us is neglected and even though i spray it regularly is constantly full of it), and i have jewelweed growing in my garden. in the beginnning i bought into the hype, but after seeing it completely ineffective i did some research and found out its the equivalent of an old wives tale.

and btw, if you google jewel weed you will find hundreds of sites claiming it is a poison ivy remedy. most of these sites also have links to bottled lotions, salves or gels that contain jewel weed for sale on the same page... how convenient. wherever easy money can be made from desperate people there will always be those who take advantage.

if you really want to try jewel weed, save your money and just collect some yourself. its a hardy plant, so you can even yank it up by the roots and just transplant it in your yard.

cheers,

Oatmeal baths help with the itching. Lavender essential oil in a carrier will help
Any kind of astringent will shrink the swollen tissues. Black tea, manzanita, etc. etc. Oak and willow help too as long as you're not allergic to aspirin. Plantain is good too.

Internally any type of blood cleanser will help, red clover, etc.

Funny story: One of my friends told me about a time when him and his smartass friend go for a walk in the woods. His friend is standing on some rocks by the water and tells him to come take a look at this huge fish. So (knowing this guy's a smartass) figures he's up to no good and if he heads over there, he'll get thrown in the water.

So eventually he convinces him to walk down near the water and look at the fish, he crouches down and looks long and hard for the fish, all the while saying something like "You know, i gotta watch out for you sometimes. I thought for sure if i came over here i'd end up in the water. That would have sucked."

His friend goes "Not as much as sitting in that poison ivy you're sitting in."

find some clay and spread a past of clay onto the arms or affected area, let dry and flake off, repeat. Clay absorbs stuff quite well, and is also used in some medical procedures for "binding" and removing toxins from the gut/intestinal tract. my mom used to apply a mix of clay and blended plantian plants to my often poison ivy'ed arms....

Tecnu is great stuff. The best I have used and most of the field archaeologists I have met use it, and they know poison ivy. If you think you have been exposed, wash off the urishol ASAP. I use Sunlight liquid dish detergent because some bath soaps don't cut oil all that well. Wash your clothes and gear too. The oils remain effective for a long time. If it is a really bad rash you may have to go to a doctor.
