Every now and again, a knife design comes along that makes you stand back and marvel at it. For me, that marvel is the new Police 3.
There are some note worthy changes from the old police, such as-
- G10 scales, with a texture closer to the Byrd G10, which is not as 'aggressive' as the G10 on the Millie.
- Full stainless liners with a screw construction.
- A most welcome finger choil.
- A new 'hour glass' clip that may be mounted for tip up/down and left/right carry.
- A full flat ground, satin finished blade, with a new stronger 'drop point' tip. The blade is slightly longer and deeper than the stainless Police.
The satin finished blade looks great. The swedge, while not as obvious as the original Police, goes almost the entire length of the blade. Another difference from the original Police, is that the spine of the blade has a very subtle 'radius' grind on it, which looks great.
The fit and finish on the Police 3, is of the typical high standard that Spyderco is famous for. The only small flaw that I could see, was that when open, the top of the tang stands slightly proud of the handle spine.
As for the handling of the Police, it is fantastic and much more secure than the stainless handled version. The slightly wider handle, coupled with the texture of the G10, serves to lend a secure and comfortable grip. I have small to medium hands and my fingers fall in just the right places. In fact, the ergonomics remind me of the Native. Those of you with larger hands, will also find the long handle to be quite functional.
I am just loving the Police3, to the extent that it bumped my CF Millie as my EDC. If you live in an area that permits the blade length of the Police, I would put the Police 3 at the top of your short list. It will be a purchase that you won't regret.
