My buddy down the road is a cop. What do you'all suggest as an ideal tactical knife. He's a patrolman.

redjohn, depends on what he wants to spend. Strider AR is awesome, thats what I carry on duty. A tad less money, Emerson knives, anything waved is great.

Just fishing around here, never actually mentioned it to him. If I were him I'd go for an automatic. What do you think of the Benchmade - Heckler & Koch - HK34FDC?

The reality is that the chance of him needing a knife for self defense are just about nil. Therefore, if he's only going to carry just one knife on duty I would recommend that he get a Leatherman Supertool or something similar. These tools can perform a much greater range of tasks than any standard knife can.

That being said, I carry a Supertool on my duty belt, a 5" Cold Steel Voyager in my pocket, and a Cold Steel push dagger in a hidden sheath attached to my vest.

I used to have a french knife, I think the name was Openel. Folding knife with a handle shaped like a broomstick. Blade locked by turning the barrel under the blade. Ugly dang thing, but I got so much use from it. If I knew the right name, I could look for it on eBay. Little help here please.

Don't buy your mate a "tactical" knife. He'll never use it for self defence. Buy him a Swiss Army Knife or a Leatherman/Gerber type of multitool. Those he'll use every day for a variety of purposes.

I would go with ReconTech's suggestion, and get a Strider AR. Fantastic knife!!

He is referring to the "wave" feature on Emerson knives, which is a wave shaped notch on the thumb rest that catches the pocket as you pull the knife out and automatically opens it. It is really fast, faster than an auto, because it is already open when you pull it out, you don't have to push a button.
