OK guys, I'm torn between a G-10, flat ground, PE police model, and the same in the millie. I would use it for general purpose, but also for food prep when backpacking (both are big and light, great for that). Which one has better, ergo's, better lock, easier to clean, etc?? which one do you just like better for no reason?

Thanks

Nathan

The ergos on the millie are better, with a mider handle...
The clean-up for the millie is better, full open spine...
The belly of the milliw is better for food prep and utility...

the lock is a toss-up. That's all preference(some ppl hate liners)...

The millie also has a good choil in it, allowing for a nice choke up on the blade.

Most here will prefer the Military over the Police but I'm going against the grain since I much prefer my G10 Police.

I sold the Military not so long ago. I like the slimness of the Police and the lockback has been good to me. Most of my knives are frame or linerlocks so the Police makes a nice change to EDC rotation.

The long, slender, flat ground makes for an excellent cutter and slicer although this makes for a weaker than average tip. Not a big deal though so long as you don't plan on doing any prying, not even light prying with this folder.

The Police fits better in my pocket than the Military.

Both are great knives and any of them will do the job just fine. Put them one next to the other and pick whichever hits your fancy more ;)

Get the Military. You won't regret it. I have both, and only carry the Military.

thanks guys, they both sound like great knives -- I'll have to just get both!!

I think we all will end up getting both eventually.
I prefer the G-10 Police model for several reasons:

It's a lock-back.
The Military has a great liner-lock, but there are still inherent drawbacks to any liner-lock. There is only a small "ball bearing" detent holding the blade closed, and it does'nt take much force to overcome that detent. The blade is more likely to open when you don't want it to (like in your pocket or after you toss it to someone). A lock-back will stay closed until you want it open.
I have also noticed that some liner-locks are rather hard to disengage after alot of force has been applied.
Not to mention oil or grease on the liner-lock can affect its performance moreso than on a lock-back.

While both handles are very comfortable, the G-10 Police handle is slimmer than the Military's and gives you more room in the pocket for other things.

I think the full-length single steel liner on the G-10 Police adds more strength than the smaller nested liner-lock on the Military.

As for the blades: the Military does have more "belly" which is good for slicing, but the G-10 Police has a longer blade and the narrow shape is great for things like removing an apple's core or filleting a fish.

And lastly, the G-10 Police has been discontinued. So you had better get one while you can.

I also think these two knives, the G-10 Police and the Military are probably the best two "work knives" that Spyderco makes.

Good luck,
Allen.

Thumbs up for the Police, I'd really suggest getting a Carbon Fibre Police if possible, stores like knifeworks and newgraham have em.
I just cleaned Linda out of hers hehe, I got a Plainedge and SpyderEdge Police in CF.

I've been trying to get a Military but theyve been hard to find, I got a S30V Military on order, hopefully I can compare them sometime in the next month or so.

For what it's worth, the price of this post, if you can find one, get the StarMate. I love mine and prefer it very much to the Police and to the Military. The Police has a very long unsupported tip that I found very worrisome in a utility knife, albeit an excellent weapon choice, and I was just not taken with the shape and function of them Military when compared to the StarMate.

I would love a starmate, all that I can find is the partly serrated models, and I hate partly serrated!
same deal with the wegner, its to be expected though.

NFMee, I guess your problem is solved, you're getting both.

If you had to choose only one or if you're still deciding on which to get first, I would recommend that you decide first how or where you will be using the knife most often. Then, I would recommend the Police if urban carrying is more frequent and the Military if backpacking is your primary use.

The Police is slim, sleek, and, imo, looks less threatening for EDC in the city than the Military. Also, I personally feel that the Police is more comfortable for EDC in my pocket. The Military's advantages for backpacking are its larger belly (for slicing foodstuff, etc. in the field), larger, ergonomic handle (for tough cutting/slicing/hacking), open back (for easier cleaning), and larger thumb hole (for use with gloves in cold environs). Although both knives are nearly identical in length, the Military's blade and handle are higher(?) and that makes the knife look larger than the Police. The non-knifeloving public could perceive the larger size as "more tactical" and "overkill" for city use.

I love 'em both and am glad I don't have to choose only one.
