I bought a used Police model. There was no box with it. I hope to get some information about it without posting pictures. The left side (non clip) has "POLICE MODEL" on the blade. The letters look to be engraved and filled in with black. The tang has "SPYDERCO". The clip side has "SEKI-JAPAN". The lock release doesn't have the Boye dent. There is no blade steel type stamped on the blade.

From this information, could someone tell me what the blade steel is and the time frame in which the knife was made?

Thanks

Blade steel is GIN-1 aka G2.Early to mid 90's Id guess on the age.

No steel stamp and bevelled handles would put it right about 1991. They went to the second generation (lock release farther back and bevelled handles) in 1991. They started using the G-2 steel stamp in 92.

Thank you for the info. it is much appreciated. I waffled around on buying this Police model because I already had one other. After seeing Yablanowitz' collection, maybe I should get a couple more.

Don't go there. ;) As near as I can tell, that is less than a third of all the variations produced.

Hey Yablanowitz

Any idea on when they stopped marking the blades with "Police"? And is that a black coated Police number 4 from the left?

That's kind of a tricky question. They've made runs of "sterile" blades since the early 90s, and the P3 has always had just the bug, but as far as I know, the SS model is still marked POLICE.

The 4th from the left is a black coated Police. I believe it is factory, but it came without box or paperwork, so I can't be certain.
