Although the Mariner was the "father" of the Police model, IMO the Police is the direct and indirect influence of a great many knives out today. Its influence is seen in the Endura, Delica, Ladybug, Rookie, Standard, Military, Benchmade AFCK; and, by association with the latter, BM's TSEK; and the original Ascent series.
The Police has been around about 14 years and is still going strong. That says a lot, considering nowadays in the "tactical" knife market, a model that's been around 5 or 6 years is often considered "old" or "outdated." In fact, the SS-handled Police has outlived many of its descendants. I have so many Spydies but I eventually keep coming back to the SS Police as my favorite. Now with its blade updated to VG-10 I want another one, which can be good or bad.
The Police has of course been upgraded, like all classic knives have been, but it's still very much the recognizable design it has always been. I prefer the hollow saber grind over the flat saber grind on my Spydies, and I'm glad the VG-10 version apparently has retained this. Honestly, I don't "need" another Police but what can I say?
