How To Polish brass bolsters on hidden tang knives

Hi everyone,

My efforts to polish brass are producing less than desirable results.

After cutting off a piece of brass from my 1"x 1" brass bar, I shape the hole to slide the knife tang into. I polish this piece of brass starting with 150 grit paper then 220 then 320 then 400 and so on up to 1000 grit. At each change in grit, I rotate the brass 90 degrees and polish until all scratches from the previous grit are COMPLETELY removed. Next, I attempt to polish the brass further on a bench top polisher.

I applied Tripoli Brown compound to a cotton wheel and adjusted the speed to roughly 2000 rpm. I buff and I buff and I buff. The edges of the brass bolster pick up a shine but not the central area. I then wipe the bolster clean and move to a different wheel with White compound on it. I buff and I buff and I buff making little if any progress.

Can anyone provide me with suggestions as to what mistakes I might be committing.

i would go to 2000 grit and only use the white. honestly with brass you should only need to go to 1000. are you are sure you are not tipping the guard so only the edge is touching ? also using too much pressure will make the wheel touch the edge more than the center. use a very light pressure. in the future, you will get more answers in the knife makers question and answer section.

Thanks for the reply, John. I'll repost this in knife makers question and answer section.
