Hey,

Got a quick question is anyone could help with.

Sharpened a knife for the first time recently, I have the bear grylls ultimate survival pro is also my first knife, I got the lansky system because I know for a fact I could not do it without some type of aid, anyway back to my question I got my knife sharp and shiny my only problem is and I think it's just me being obsessive but the shine on my blade has a glitter effect only way I could describe it, it doesn't have a nice even shine all the way down the blade edge so I was wondering if there is a way to do it or am I doing something wrong ?

Thanks

I am no expert. But you need to spend more time on the grits before moving up(grit progression). To explain... You need to remove the prior scratch pattern of the last grit before you move to the next higher grit. You are seeing the scratch pattern left behind from the last grit.

Ah right should I start from my lowest grit of could I start with a finer ? I spent awhile doing it but that's because I had to get the angle from 15 to 17 and I hadn't received the extra course so it took me ages to do, guess I'll just have to experiment and learn.

Thanks for your reply much appreciated

Once you have already reprofiled your new edge and created the burr. You won't need to start at the lowest grit again. You will need to spend more time on the following grits though. A loupe or microscope is good to have to be able to look at the edge to see the scratch pattern of that grit from heel to tip of the edge. You can go to as good light and look at the refraction of the edge at different angles to see if you don't have either. Once this is accomplished you can move up. There is no set time or number of strokes. Remember not to spend too much time on one side. Keep time on both sides the same to keep both sides even. If you need to take breaks do so. This will take the most time at first. Once you have accomplished the edge you like. Touch ups are fast and easy :)

Ah right thanks for all this :), I may have already spent longer on one side of my blade in my stress of trying to re angle it lol now I know anyway.

Just one more thing will the point in my blade sharpen as I do my blade or is there a different way of doing a point ?

As long as you go all the way to the tip you will sharpen the tip too. Be careful not to run the tip off the end of your stones or you will round the tip off. You can also just focus on certain parts of the edge to make it equally sharp. But always follow up with some strokes across the whole edge to make the scratch pattern the same throughout the edge. You can also mark your edge with a sharpie on both sides to see where you are hitting the edge/missing. Then you can make adjustments to you strokes/parts of the edge.
