Can someone comment on how to polish flats without ruining grind lines. I've heard lots of advice...finish the flats before bevels are ground, finish the flats afterwards by hand, and finish the flats carefully by machine after beveling. I'm new, and none have worked for me yet. I keep rubbing away crisp grind lines.
Thanks, Jeff

I assume from your other post on hollow grinding that you are doing a partial hollow grind and polishing from there. The best way I know of is to use micron belts on the same contact wheel as you ground on. Start after heat treat with 60 micron, and work down to 9 micron. Polish the hollow ground portion the same way you ground it, and polish the flats with the blade held parallel to the direction of belt travel. It helps to have a very flat contact wheel, as opposed to one with a crown. Then buff with your choice of compounds.

i'm no expert on this, most of my blades a fully flat ground, but i say slow your belt sander down to the lowest possible speed, or modify it to go very slow, say 300rpms on the drive wheel. and grind watching the lines.
