Polish screws on Sebenza?

Well, we all know that the surface finish on the Sebenza screws has gone down hill lately, that's just part of it. The surface finish of the older screws used to be excellent, almost mirror polished.

My question is, has anyone here polished up the new screws to make them more like the old ones? How well does it take the polish if you have? Personally I think the shiny screws really add something to the knife, so I'm looking forward to doing this regardless, but I would like to know if anyone here has done it before me. Thanks guys and gals.

Yeah, me too at first. I actually am from Poland, so I resemble that remark :) Please don't attempt to polish a Polish person. We're pretty enough already ;)

I did take a look at a May 2012 Sebenza at my local shop recently. I did notice the screws had the hex holes a tad off-center. Also noted the finish was a bit more dull. Not a huge deal to me, but I understand why folks notice these things on a knife that is the symbol of perfection.

For the screws, you could try a metal polish, such as are used on alloy wheels to make them shiny and remove oxidation. Put some on a rag and go nuts (or is it screws?). You'd want to take te screws out of the knife first.

Just curious, what thread are the Sebenza screws? Metric or standard? What size?

Took the screws all the way down to 1/4 micron. The screws are literally tiny mirrors now. I'll update with pics tomorrow. Easy job.

I took all of the screws from my CRK knives and polished them at work with white then pink rouge. They came out great. Its easier for me I guess because our shop is already set up to polish things. I'll see if I can get a fews pics and post them.

A dremel with buffing wheel makes this easy and does make a huge difference in the appearance. I thought I was the only one silly enough to polish screws :)

Waiting on those pics John. An explanation of your method would help too. I want to do mine but don't have power tools. I'm thinking about rubbing them on strops. That always works wonders on a washer. :D

I used a buffing wheel and green compound to give new life to older screws and it worked great. I personally love the high polished look.

Last week I did the screws on my CF I just got. Used some 2000 then worked them on leather with compounds. Wow!

Pretty curious about this myself. I'd love to know what everyone is using to polish, some have already posted. About all I have is some autosol and a strop with white and green compound. I'd definitely like to turn them into mirrors, always thought the old school screws looked amazing.

This thread definitely needs some pictures. I have a few spare off center screws to try on as a first go next week.

2000 grit sandpaper? I want to do mine but was torn about where to start. I was going to use a spyderco UF then BRKT black, green, white & .25 micron spray.

I have a small dremmel knock-off but I'd be afraid about holding the screw. My luck and it would be launched through the window.

Hope it's 2000 sandpaper, I have that and 2500. I have a the crayon compounds, dia-pastes, and 24 carat diamond sprays. Post back hammertyme

Yes 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper. First I secured it to a hard flat surface. Then by hand worked each screw with light even pressure across the entire head. Very little material should be removed. This will leave a cloudy look. I then repeated on strop with green & white compound. Hope this helps.

Thanks Hammertyme, I did one last night startng at 2500 grit and used the compounds. I found when doing the back side, that I only needed the compounds to get it shiny.

I've polished the screws on my 21 that I traded away using my leather belt on my grinder. It looked pretty darn nice.

I finished all of mine today using coarse, medium & fine stropping compound on soft pieces of cardboard. Looks like mirrors!

So you can achieve that with just compounds a strop? I'm going to have to give this a try, I have white and green compounds on my strop.

Any pics you feel like popping on here? Every thread is better with pictures.

Take my word for it, it's not worth my time of taking pics. You can post yours! :)

I have BRKT black, green & white sticks. I rubbed a little on 3 pieces of cardboard and rubbed the screw's heads (both sides) on each one, manually & turning them to hit all of the screw. Then I polished on my pant leg and was done.

I have dia-paste 6, 3, 1 micron too which I'm sure would be fine if you have that - use a dot and rub on a bit of cardboard or what ever you want to use.

You'll be fine with green and white. Rub the heads until they're cloudy using your green, then remove it with some sort of soft fabric, then use the white, and finish on some fabric - set up over your strop or something. That should remove the last bit of white and polish them at the same time.

I polished mine on a cape cod polishing cloth. They look like little mirrors now and it only taook me like 5 minutes per screw. I didn't realize how cheap the stock screws looked until I polished them up.

Awesome, thanks for the advice. I'll give it a shot.
