After working tirelessly and following all of the good advice from those of you who were kind enough to weigh in, I really messed up. After getting all the way down to 1 micron paste and stropping for what seemed like an eternity, I could see myself clearly in the edge. Emboldened by this, I switched to another knife I was working on and retired for the evening.

Needless to say I forgot to reset the DMT aligner when i decided that I could refine the edge on my Gayle Bradley even further and Viola! I messed up my edge. I subsequently went back to the Course stone and worked up all the way through again, but nowhere near where i was before.

What do I do? I have tried to get the clamp in the same position as it was before, but I suspect it is not exact. Once again a have a line about the size of a hair all along the edge of the blade and I just can't seem to get it to go away. WHY won't that line go away??

Forgot to mention: I am using the DMT aligner on the second to lowest setting

That hairline along the edge is still there because the clamp/knife setup is just that much too shallow, as compared to the original setup. No point in trying to re-adjust it, just keep going with the hones until the edge is apexed again. It will take a long while, because you'll have to remove a lot of metal from the bevel behind the edge to get there. And as that bevel gets wider, the contact area under the hone gets larger. So it gets exponentially slower as you go. Keep at it, be patient, and take a break or two as you go. If you get tired or frustrated, just put it all down for a while and do something to rest, relax and regenerate. It won't seem quite so hard when you come back to it refreshed. :)

You've learned the hard way, not to move the clamp until you're absolutely sure it's done. I'm pretty sure you won't do that again. ;)
