Polished or mirror S30V

Please forgive me if I come off as naïve in this post. I've heard that achieving a mirror finish on CPMS30V is impossible. That being true, is it possible for an S30V blade to have the same finish or polish on the entire blade that it's cutting edge has? Again, please forgive me if I sound like an idiot. I just figure if the edge of an S30V knife can look shiny, why couldn't the whole blade—either simply for appearance or for increasing corrosion resistance? Thanks for any (preferably non-harsh) replies.

it can get mirror polished, it just is not an easy thing compared to a simple carbon steel or softer stainless, so most makers don't do it because they'd lose money.

judging by some of the edges I've seen it should be able to take a decent polish. Not sure if it will ever get a perfect mirror polish or not, though.

Whatever finish you choose, I imagine it's always easier to refinish a smaller area than a large area.
If you can polish the edge then I'm sure you could polish the entire blade, but it would take much longer.

I believe s30v blades can be mirrored but it is best to do much of the polishing before the blade is hardened.

That is my Loveless-Style Drop-point Hunter in CPM-S30V steel made by W.C. Davis, and it is as close to "mirror" as any knife I own. Polishing the steel of a knife is achieved by the same means as sharpening the edge, abrasion. Mirror-finish is achieved via very fine abrasives applied in a uniform direction across the surface. High carbide steels like S30V strongly resist abrasion. This resistance isn't as noticeable when polishing a thin area of metal at the edge with <1000 grit abrasives, but achieving a uniform polish across a wider area is no mean task on such steels... But it sure is purdy

Start sanding. Work your way to extreme grits, then begin stropping the hell out of it with Mother's Mag Polish. You can go even further than that with diamond sprays.

Protip: It won't be easy, and it won't be quick.

If you want a "true" mirror finish and want good steel, you'll have to move up to something like M390.
