Polished USAF Survival Knife

I understand the polished version of the USAF survival knife is no longer made. I've got one I purchased some time ago. I want to know what kind of steel these were made of. Is it the same as the issue Camillus USAF knife? Are there any other differences from the issue knife, other than the polishing? Also, when were they discontinued? and why? I would think they would still be a great seller. After drooling over many an expensive survival-type knife, I went to my closet and pulled the Camillus out. It looks like it will do anything the more modern knives will do, and do it with a hint of history lacking in other knives.

Phil or Will, along the same line, I understand the Jet Pilot survival knife was developed for Air Force pilots. During my military career I saw almost every Army helecopter pilot with the exact same knife as an issued item. My question is: Were the Navy and Marine Corp aviators also issued this same knife or did they use something else? Thanks.

Hazardous,
The construction and steel used in the mil-spec and polished PILOT'S SURVIVAL KNIFE is the same, 1095 carbon. I've been trying to get some more concrete dates for you, but we basically made the polished version for about 10 years, stopping production around 1990. Sales really dropped off for the polished version, so it was discountinued. The 5" PILOT'S SURVIVAL is a very proven design, that has served our nation's military pilots for decades.

Bruce,
The PILOT'S SURVIVAL KNIFE has been issued to military pilots of all branches of service.

I'm getting our company historian to come in to the forum soon and give more detailed info. regarding early CAMILLUS models, sespecially our military knives.

Thanks for the interest!
