why and again i ask myself why. I was outside today using my hatchula it was -10-15 or so and the sun with the snow and the "polished blade" (i wouldnt say it is even close to polished blade) kept flashing light into my eyes and it was getting painful. Do any of you purposely polsih your blade for any other reason then looks? I could not imagine having a mirror shine blade as a user. That being said, im not much for coatings as i find the drag when cutting is very noticeable espically with a good coating "esee". I prefer patina if you prefer a polished blade please explain why. Or a coated blade please explain

The appeal of a coated blade is easy,..A good coated blade is much more rust resistant. The Strider coating is very tough. I would imagine a polished blade would have less side friction so in theory, it should cut through thick stuff more efficient.

Blade coatings make steels like D2 and M4 more appealing for mass production knives, I suppose. Not everybody knows how to take care of non-stainless steels.

I seem to remember some blade coatings (TiAn?) being billed as actually reducing friction....

A polished blade cuts with less resistance, and has better corrosion resistance than uncoated steel of coarser finish. I like a high polish on my blades--not quite true mirror, but about the same level of polish as a SAK. :)

My favorite finish is a mirror plus patina. Very corrosion resistant (compared to plain satin finish), cuts easier than a rough finish or coated blade, and just looks damn sexy.

This.

Depending on what you are cutting, the difference in resistance can be substantial. Not everyone will/can appreciate it...sort of like not everyone cares if a pivot is silky smooth.

A mirror polished blade has a lot less resistance and I feel like in a survival/Hinton situation it could be used for signaling.

now that im done being random maybe you should be to. I did not ask for a silly soulution

Chair.

Actually it's not a silly solution. It allows for all the advantages of a mirror polished blade, without a drag producing coating, and using a stainless steel. Try it sometime. I'm sure that you have a marker lying around somewhere; should you decide you don't like it, it will come off easy enough.
