Polishing a D2 RAT-5 blade?

Hello-

I have a RAT 5 blade which has had the epoxy coating taken off of it. The blade is in need of sharpening, and I would like to get it to a nice mirror shine.

I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right area, but does anyone here do this? I'd do it myself but I don't have the patience, and I'd rather not screw it up.

Thanks!

Good Luck. There are only three makers that I know of that ever pulled it off with D-2.

D-2 doesn't take a good mirrow polish without a huge amount of work, and a lot of skill.

I don't know too many guys who would do that, I can however tell you how to get it close to mirror finish. I start out with ceramic stones or ultra fine sand paper tacked onto a phone book, hunk of leather or mouse pad. Finish out with a loaded strop. It takes more work but you can use an old belt and toothpaste (or an old suede boot). Once you get a feel for the angles you can strop while watching TV or a movie, stropping to mirror finish can take a while. Not great for shiny finishes but I pulled a hair splitting edge by stropping with no compound on a canvas camp chair.
If you are looking for a good system try Edge Pro or Sharp Maker. If you have a table grinder seriously look into getting some paper wheels.

Oh, yeah... welcome to the forum. :D

That's why I'm not doing it myself. I don't have the time or skill.

It doesn't need to be a bright mirror polish, but the closer the better. It will at the very least *inhibit* surface rust.
