What is the technique for polishing a blade on a buffer? What kind of wheel and grit?
Thanks

The buffing machine is the most dangerous tool used in any knifemaking shop.It is not a job to be taken lightly. Many makers have had serious injury from accidents while buffing, experienced makers.
It only takes a split second to turn a simple job, into a hospital stay.

Hello,

Yep, a buffer can grab a blade and trow it in any direction faster then a bullet.. so please, practice on a small wheel with something else first which does not have sharp edges. Reminder.. I've never seen any buffer injury which didn't need surgical care ( guy was polishing on a huge 20 inch wheel, blade got cought, ripped from his hands, trown to the floor, tip down trough his foot, knife shattered on the concrete.. huge wound and he still limps :D ).

But then.. it isn't THE most dangerous tool .. ever seen a disc from an angle grinder shatter ??? It's the second most dangerous tool :D

OK... to answer your question.. depends on the original finish of the blade.. from what I've see on a sebenza, I'd take a sisal wheel with coarse paste and give it a satin finish, the polish with a stiched cotton wheel with superfine paste ( I use the stuff they use to mirror polish brass). Try and stay clear of the grind lines, they easily get buffed much faster then the rest of the blade.

Greetz and take care, bart.
