hey guys,.......been looking for a tutorial of sorts on here for polishing an axe and as of yet I haven't been able to find one. (probably here I just failed to find it) I see a lot of examples of this and would like to try it. Would a few of you guys who have some experience doing this care to post some basic instructions,........and also maybe some common mistakes made to avoid poor quality outcomes ??

Thanks, Aaron C

When you say 'polish' what exactly do you mean? Are you looking for a mirror finish? A natural patinated finish with a coating over it? Bluing?

A mirror finished axe would look awesome.

Wouldn't it be pretty similar to a knife, just use ever finer sandpaper, wet and dry paper and then buff with some sort of polishing compound to finish off?

Then what Alfk said,

FWIW, the hardened bit of the axe will be harder to polish then the softer body of the axe. Persistence is your friend. Belt grinders or sanders can speed things up at the risk of ruining the temper.
