Polishing an edge with the KME

I am thinking of buying the KME sharpener and with it also some Lapping films/ polishing tapes. The finest stone would be a 1500 grit diamond stone, and I am not sure, if ( to achieve a decent mirror edge) it would be a mistake to skip the 1800-2000 grit tape and directly jump to the 3000 grit tape?
