Help I'm trying to make me own blades....

Iwant to know something about the hardening
proces.

I'm using Iron that needs to be water treated.
After I am ready with polishing I want to harden the knive.
It becomes verry hard (about 63 rocwell) but i have a problem to get off the corosion. I have to start over
polishing again.

I want to know Is there somthing to prevent the corosion!!!!

I’m a newby in this FOREM and i tryed the FAQ’s
Sorry for my poor English (I’m Dutch)

I know you can put baking soda in your dip bucket to help slow down if not prevent rust forming on your blade. What is the steel you're using??

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!http://www.nebsnow.com/L6steel

Buckx, Are you saying that after the quench, the finish on the blade is rough and scaly? How are you heating the blade? What temp do you quench?
I use a oxy-acetylene torch or a gas forge for my heat source. I heat the blade to non-magnetic and then quench on a rising heat. Then temper the blade.
I am using oil hardening steel, but I don't get much scale unless I overheat the steel. The magnet helps to insure the proper quench temperture.
I finish my blades to a 240 grit finish before heat treat, it is easier for me to get the rough scratches out before the heat treat, and it eliminates any stress risers from lower grit deep scratches, any finer finish before heat treat is a waste of time IMHO.
